Rise (Spelldrift: Coven of Fire, #1)Rise by Sierra Cross
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

Alix Hill is a young woman living in an alternative reality modern day Seattle whose mother was a very powerful witch who led a coven of powerful witches. After losing both of her parents and every member of the coven she has to make it through life without them. Ten years later, she's still healing from the trauma of all she lost. To top it off, she's forced to go through life knowing that she doesn't have any magical abilities like her parents. Throughout the book we watch Alix grow and change... And it all starts when she protects a coworker at the bar where she works. After she decides to leave that job and go work with her aunt, things start to change. Alix realizes that there's more to herself than she thought and that someone has been magically keeping her powers from her. This sparks a whole new life and a lot of dangerous adventure.

This story flows well and is very engaging. There are many twists and turns that leave the reader guessing. Even without being able to guess what is going to happen next, when it happens it's almost obvious because of how well the author set up the story line. There is a forbidden love aspect of the story which gives it just enough romance without being overdone, and gives her character even more of a tragic hero vibe.

The supporting characters are as well developed as the main character. Those supporting characters gave me the feeling of familiarity as they seemed like people I would know. There are some typos but nothing major. Overall I really enjoyed the story and can't wait to read the rest of the series.
