SYNOPSIS

For centuries, the gift of foresight, among witches, has been rare.

That is until I was born.

My coven wanted to use my gift for their own benefit, unknowing that someone else has the exact same goal in mind. That’s why my captor took me away from my home.

Now that I’m free from my prison, my visions are coming in more clearly.

War is coming, and I must find a way to stop it at all costs.

If I fail, it’ll mean the end of not only the supernatural world, but the human one as well. Can I save the entire world from crumbling, or will we all turn to ash and dust?

 EXCERPT

I know I’m seeing a vision the moment I realize I’m outside, smelling the fresh air. Blinking rapidly, I shield my eyes, against the sun’s bright rays, instantly realizing that I’ve had this same exact vision before.

I already know what’s coming next.

However, it still doesn’t stop me from walking around, as I try to figure out where I am. All I know is that I have a sense of feeling lost, and I’m surrounded by trees. I also know that I’ve never been here before, and I try not to panic, as fear begins to creep in.

Deciding to keep moving, I walk through the thick brush, hoping to get to safety. That’s another reason why I know I’ve had this vision before. I remember feeling the intense rush of fear and terror. I don’t know why I keep having this same vision, and I don’t know why I keep seeing this exact spot in the forest either.

As I walk into a clearing, I stop to catch my breath for a moment. My heart races, as I glance around, and then, the fear comes back. I know at any moment something awful is about to happen, and no matter how many times I’ve witnessed it, I’m not ready for it.

However, that doesn’t stop the vision from continuing on.

I can’t leave, until I’ve see everything that I’m supposed to see.

Just as I’m about to move further into the woods, a grizzly bear spots me. At first, it’s nonthreatening, and it even moves closer to inspect me. I know not to approach a bear, but that still doesn’t stop me from slowly walking closer.

There’s something literally pulling me to the bear, and although I’m trying to fight against that pull, I can’t stop it.

Holding out my hand, I wait for the bear to smell me, and I smile, once he does so. For a moment, the wild animal simply looks at me, like I’m a friend or someone familiar. I stand as still as possible, as it takes its time, and I will my heart to stop pounding in my chest. I heard once that animals can smell your fear, and I hope that’s not true.

Letting out a sigh, I start to relax. However, the moment I drop my guard, I notice the bear’s hair on his back, starting to rise, and I know I’ve done something horrible. The bear lets out the loudest growl I’ve ever heard before, and my first instinct is to run.

Stepping back, I don’t get the chance to even turn around, before the bear slashes his claw right into my stomach. Glancing down in a daze, I grab the open wound, wondering exactly what happened to startle it.

With my hand covered in my own blood, I begin to shake, as I realize the bear is standing on its hind legs, readying up for another attack. My eyes widen, as my entire body freezes. I can’t move, breathe, or even think in that moment. All I know is I’m about to be mauled by a bear in the woods, and there’s no one around to save me from this horrific outcome.

As the bear swings his paw at me once more, I let out a scream, and then quickly drop to the ground. The wound on my stomach sends a rush of pain throughout my body, but I’m determined not to let this animal kill me. Rolling onto my belly, I use one hand to hold my wound, as I begin to crawl away. Unimaginable pain, takes my breath away, but I’m not going to die, lost in these woods.

I only make it a few inches away, before I hear a howl behind me. Looking back, my eyes widen, as I take in the scene in front of me. A reddish, brown wolf has its jaw locked tight around the bear’s throat. Shock and disbelief flow through me, because I’ve never seen such a magnificent creature.

So, I’m not surprised at all, when the bear falls to its death, after a few moments of struggling.

Falling onto my back, my eyes begin to drupe, as the pain becomes too much to bare. I know I won’t die, but I can still feel pain. It’s not something I’ve had to deal with, so I don’t even bother trying to stay awake.

The moment the wolf stands over me, I slowly reach my hand up to touch him. Suddenly, the rush of pain I feel dulls, and the sense of protectiveness replaces it. I have no clue what it means, but it’s enough for me to relax, and then, I let the blackness take over.

*****

Jerking up, I run a hand down my face, reminding myself that it was only a vision. Even if I know the vision wasn’t actually happening, I still reach down and lift my shirt, as I check for any wounds. Seeing nothing there, I push out a heavy sigh, hating how real my foresight can be.

Sometimes, I can’t tell if they’re real or not.

That’s when I feel myself losing my sense of reality.

Getting up, I pace around the basement, as I try to settle my thoughts. Every single time I have that vision, it always makes me sad that it’s not real. I don’t know why I keep seeing the wolf, or why the sense of protectiveness washes through me. It doesn’t matter that I’ve had this same exact vision for over a century now. I still can’t make sense of it.

Why do I keep having it, and why hasn’t it come to pass?

Stopping in my tracks, I look to my left, realizing my captor was down here, while I was in my vision. Clenching my hands, I hate knowing how defenseless I am, while I’m in that state. I have no way of protecting myself, which is why I need my coven. If I’m in a vision with an enemy around, they could easily kill me, and I would never know it.

Walking over to the tray of food on the stairs, I pick it up, and then throw it as hard as I can at the basement door. It flies back, once it hits the protection spell, keeping me locked down here. Watching it bounce down the stairs, rage and frustration rushes through me, and it almost overwhelms me.

As I begin to shake with anger, unlike anything I’ve ever felt before, I know I need to let it out. I can’t keep holding it in, because if I do, I’ll end up drowning in it. So, I do the only thing I know to do.

I scream as loud as I can.

New Review! Bourbon Fireball (The Barrel House #4) by Shari J Ryan 5 Cranky Stars

Bourbon Fireball (The Barrel House #4)Bourbon Fireball by Shari J. Ryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Cranky Stars

Well this book came out of left field for me. Once again Shari J. Ryan touched on a subject I know all too well and that’s the subject of loss. In Bourbon Fireball we get the story of Brody and Journey from his POV. There are layers to Brody that we didn’t even realize. We knew he might have been holding onto a secret, but we weren’t sure how deep it went. This explores that and his relationship with his daughter Hannah and Journey.

Brody at one point seem to have it all. A high school baseball career, a good family, and a few friends. He has always crushed on Journey but knew maybe it wasn’t their time when she sped off into the night. Yet that wasn’t the only thing to alter his life you see Brody once had a best friend who did the unthinkable and he carries this with him still to this day. He managed to pick up the pieces and lock them up tight and got married and divorced and became a single dad. When he is confronted with seeing Journey again after all these years, he figures this is his chance. He knows he has skeletons in his closet and so does she. Little by little they open up to each other and become important in each other’s lives. Being a single dad is hard and starting a relationship with his ongoing secret isn’t easy, but I guess nothing ever is if you want it bad enough.

Like I said this story touched me. I read it in a day and a half and that’s a record for me lately. My mental health hasn’t been great, but I have an amazing family by my side every day. I wish that were the case here. I think even years later all of us are trying to pick up the pieces of our tragedy. I liked that Brody was such a consistent good father. He didn’t take Hannah’s attitude as being a teenager. I disliked her mom and I’m glad Journey stopped running along enough for Brody to catch her. I really enjoyed this whole series.

New Review! Bourbon Night's (The Barrel House #3) by Shari J. Ryan 4.5 Cranky Stars

Bourbon Nights (The Barrel House, #3)Bourbon Nights by Shari J. Ryan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

Bourbon Nights is Brett’s story from Bourbon Love Notes. It’s about his life before he met Melody since that life altering moment 10 years ago. Brett is a retired Marine with a big secret, and he comes with a spunky tutu adorned 7-year-old named Parker. He steps in to help at The Barrel House while the Quinn family faces the loss of their patriarch.

Brett has always noticed Melody but never acted on it. He chalked it up to her family being close to his. He signed his future away on the dotted lines when he joined the Marines. He was deployed twice and that came with some serious life altering consequences, but Brett has always the quiet stoic one, so he buries them deep. When his best friend ends up pregnant, he steps in to help her as any friend would do. Flash forward ten years and he is called home and it’s here he reunites with Melody. Things are dodgy at first but slowly the fall in love and tackle losses and setbacks together.

I will say these books are such an effortless read. They make me want to flip the pages to see what’s next. You might think oh this is just basically a retelling of the same story but it’s not. We learn Brett is so much deeper than we thought. He is real and affected by real life problems. I liked that he was this pillar for Melody and Parker. I liked that he wasn’t afraid to admit he needed help. Once again The Barrel House series has triggered my emotions again but let’s be honest aren’t, we all emotional this year? I can’t wait for Brody’s story next!

New Review! Love Always, Wild by A.M. Johnson 5 Cranky Stars

Love Always, WildLove Always, Wild by A.M. Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Cranky Stars

“You deserved to be loved out loud, in the open, in front of the world. Let me give that to you.” Pardon me while I cry into my kindle. Has anyone seen my Kleenex? I love that A.M. Johnson isn’t an author who just cranks out books (not that there is anything wrong with that truly) you are in for an emotional highlighting passages in your Kindle making you stop to look at your life kind of ride. She invokes feelings and thoughts you didn’t know you had and for that I love her words. She’s also a sweet awesome champion of everyone’s right to love no matter what kind of human.

Wilder Welles was an out and proud gay man who built his own family with the friends he held near. His parents have cut him out their life when he didn’t fit their idea of a perfect family. He hid in the library at college just existing until he met Jaxon Stettler. Jax was a closeted gay from a small religious simple-minded town in the South. You under no circumstances paraded that around unless you were ready for the bullying. The only time he felt himself was those stolen moments when him and Wilder hid behind a dorm room door. Sadly, their story wasn’t meant to be when tragedy struck and Jax left and fueled Wilds abandonment issues more. They meet again 9 years later over emails in which Jax hides who he truly is. He is still stuck in this backwoods town working a construction job and Wilder just wrote a successful book. When they meet it’s not the reunion Jax hoped for but little by little he proved to Wild that he is in it for the long haul. It wasn’t easy it was messy, but it was so worth it.

Woman!! Why do you do this to me?? I was so hooked. I really felt for Wilder I could see why he thought Jax would leave again but seriously he needed to man up. June was my idol because without her there would be no story in my opinion. I loved that Jax had this big heart for his family well except his dad. This book deals with a lot of issues. The religious aspect that a lot of them don’t accept gay people, the fear of coming out and losing everything, living your best life, and the fear of abandonment are just many lessons in this book. This Cranky girl feels that love is love and you should love who you want openly and out loud just like Wilder and Jax.

New Review! Smokey's Mountain (Mountain Top #2) by Savannah Maris 5 Cranky Stars

Smokey's Mountain (Mountain Top, #2)Smokey's Mountain by Savannah Maris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 CRANKY STARS

As I usually say at the start of my reviews of love stories, I never really cared too much for them. But, I have now found several authors that write amazing, heartfelt romances. Savanna Maris is one of those authors. This book takes place in the same town as Blu's Ridge so if you read that one, this will feel like home. It is a standalone novel that will pull at your heartstrings so have the tissues ready.

Smokey and Gwen both have pasts best left behind. They have been burned by former SO's and are not ready for new romances. That is until they meet by chance one night at the local bar. Gwen is new to town, trying to start over with a promotion as the new bank manager. Smokey works with his brother as an outdoor adventure guide. He lives for the adrenaline rush of danger in the great outdoors. She is a city girl with no outdoor hobbies. The night they meet, the stars align and they approach the dating scene with trepidation. As things go on, life is made very intense by their exes, who suddenly don't want to be exes. You'll laugh and cry with them as they work their way through the obstacle course of new feelings and desires. The author makes this couple one you'll never forget.

New Review! Descendants of the Curse: Jessie's Awakening by C.S. Kendall 4 Cranky Stars

Descendants of the Curse: Jessie's Awakening (Descendants of the Curse #1)Descendants of the Curse: Jessie's Awakening by C.S. Kendall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

Jessie Mason is a typical high schooler, falling in love for the first time and doing what she loves best: performing onstage in a musical. After a great surprise party for her seventeenth birthday, her world comes crashing down around her. Her parents tell her that she is the descendant of an immortal race, one which drank from the Fountain of Youth centuries ago. . "Enjoy whatever is still normal for you now, Mason, because life as you know it is almost over."

Hey, being immortal isn't so bad, but in order to live forever, there is a cost. Once a month, Jessie will have to commit murder as payment for the eternal life granted by the waters. "You are the hands, the water personified, and it has to feed."

And another thing....Jessie has to break up with her boyfriend, abandon her best friend, and give up her starring role in the musical To make things even harder, her parents tell her that she is betrothed to another Immortal named Tyler Emmanuel. Can things get worse?

Of course they can! Jessie starts training to be able to live with the voice that she begins hearing. Maybe she is going insane? Or, maybe her parents are the insane ones. Jessie thinks that she can control the waters, but after several excruciating attempts to do so, she learns that it is not possible. "There's freedom in surrender." As she starts to surrender control, the voice seems to be pacified (at least for a while).

The Community of Immortals has devised a way to take care of the bloodlust of the voice while at the same time ridding society of some of the worst criminals. Jessie must come to terms with the fact that in order to live, she must commit murder. "I mean, who wants to be a ruthless murderer?" She also learns that there is a group of people who are trying to eliminate the Immortals. After receiving several threatening notes, Jessie doesn't know who she can trust. "I know what you are. I'm watching. You try to hurt anyone and you're dead."

I found this book to be a quick and enjoyable read. The story was well-written and the concept was unique. There is a little romance sprinkled in for fun and several great scenes of conflict between Jessie and her friends and younger sister. I look forward to continuing Jessie's journey as she comes to terms with her new normal.
