New Review! Delta by Jordan Elizabeth 4.5 Cranky Stars

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

This is historical fiction that I didn’t realize until I started reading is set in the area where I grew up. What a pleasant surprise. I find this type of book much more interesting when you can relate to the areas they are discussing. I just hope it doesn’t limit the number of readers who would be interested in this story.

This story takes place in in Central New York State near Utica and Rome. The small town of Delta is in a valley with walls the shape of a bowl. There is a small river running through the town and they are quite near the Erie Canal. It starts in 1902 when Lottie turns 8-years-old. She is the oldest daughter of an old family in that town. Today she meets her Aunt Flora and also finds out her family is based on secrets that no one will tell her.

Her younger sister is spoiled and always gets her way. She has two older brothers and a housekeeper. Her parents have always treated her differently. When her sister wants to see a famous Psychic that has come to town, all four children must go. Strange things happen to Lottie at the reading and the reading turns out to be about her and not her sister. As all this is happening the long-standing rumors about the state flooding the town to expand the Erie Canal come true. Slowly, the locals start moving away. Lottie is now 16 and falling for her brother’s friend. But he too is moving. He begs her to go with his family but her father forbids it. Little does she know what her 17th birthday will bring. Secrets are exposed and she must run for her life.

Well written and very interesting. Some paranormal magic mixed with history. All in all, a delightful story. Lake Delta State Park is still in use to this day.
