4.5 CRANKY STARS
This is a story of medieval times but there are no knights in shiny armor. As usual there is corruption, greed and squalor. Some things never change so these are timeless tales. The good king died, and his son took over and the kingdom now suffers. I love this kind of story because usually the good guys win and live happily ever after. This story has a unique twist at the end that involves magic.
Meadow lost her mother a year ago to the wilting sickness and has been devastated ever since. Her best friend tells her to write about her feelings and go to a group in the slums called “the gathering”. Perhaps if she talks about it, she’ll come out of her slump. Unfortunately, she chose the wrong night because the Prince shows up and arrests everyone for treason. Placed in prison, she is sure her life is over. Little does she know but her world is about to be turned upside down.
Meanwhile, two others at the meeting were able to escape and their paths will cross again. Meadow is an extremely headstrong girl. Seems that whatever is done to help her, she does just the opposite. Her one desire is to find her father and protect him. However, she just keeps getting into more and more trouble as she searches for him. There is magic involved in this story but some of it doesn’t make sense and I’m not sure why it is there. The magic in the end is totally unexpected and adds that unique twist I mentioned. I wonder if there will be follow up books.
