This is a very well written book about magic and sea serpents. The world the author created is easy to accept and reminiscent of our feudal past. The Earl’s castle is situated on a Loch so the idea that a sea serpent inhabits it is plausible. The characters are very believable and sympathetic. In other words, I loved this book.
Janna is a young, immature fifteen-year-old who is technically a servant, but she runs wild with the sons of the Earl. Her sister is sixteen and already worried about finding the perfect match to up her station in life. No running wild for her. She is too refined. However, one day she is running with Janna to the top of the old watch tower and to their horror, an enemy army is running from the woods. Their world is changed forever.
Janna survives the attack, but her life goes from bad to worse. Her mother also survives but there is no love for Janna from her. Janna must face some hard truths about her life. She discovers a form of magic she possesses but her mother tells her to tell no one. Then she finds out the Earl’s sons are still alive but in prison in Kachine. Her goal now is to find and free them. It has been several years when she sets out on her journey and she finds her true history. Twists and turns within a well written story keep the reader on the edge of their seat.
