Upon Which Victor Viper Sat: A Cogling Short Story by Jordan Elizabeth by Jordan Elizabeth
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
5 Cranky Stars
A cute little short story by Jordan Elizabeth. It is a mixture of class bullying, steam punk and the supernatural. Lady Rachel Waxman is a wealthy teenager who appears to enjoy lording over her maid. The maid is Edna and she is fifteen. However, Lady Rachel is very immature compared to Edna. Rachel can't resist telling Edna what her shortcomings are because she lives in the slums. For instance, Lady Rachel's mother made paper cranes and hung them from the ceiling. Rachel can't resist telling Edna that she must not be familiar with paper like that because she lives in the slums. The birds are for a play her mother's troupe is performing in the Zink Garden. After gathering the cranes into a box that belongs to her mother, she is going to have Edna carry it to the garden. First though she must find suitable clothes for her maid to wear. When the day comes, Rachel makes Edna wear a dress suited more for a ten year old than a fifteen year old. At the garden, the players troupe is behind the stage and to Edna's dismay, they are all robots. Robots are very popular in this society. Of course, one of the robots (or is it) grabs the box and runs off. Edna finds a note with an address on the ground and Lady Rachel makes her chase the robot to retrieve the box. Once Edna finds someone to tell her where the assignation point is, she is off on a terrifying adventure. What she finds is not at all what she had expected.
Delightful story that, as with all short stories, ended too soon.
