This is actually a second book in a series called Serpent Riders. The first book was called "Janna of Castle Ambrose". It's not necessary to read the first book to enjoy this book. It takes place 13 years later and is about Janna's daughter.
Janna and Ramsey are now King and Queen and ruling in a just way. They are trying to help their people but things aren't all rosy in the Kingdom. King Ramsey's father had liberated the land from a tyrant with no real tie to the kingdom whereas, he was a blood relative. Regardless, many people were killed and King Ramsey carried the backlash as the Usurper's son. They believe Janna to be a common whore and yelled it frequently. Since neither the King nor his Queen really wanted to rule, they constantly went on diplomatic missions to other countries. Janna, their youngest daughter was quite rebellious and unruly. She loved being outdoors but she tried to be what they wanted. For her 21st birthday she is named the head of a training school for Serpent Riders on an island in the sea. She is mortified when her fiancee is named as her assistant. Of course, he takes over and makes her feel quite as useless as her family always has. Janna meets an Earl who once saved her when she was but thirteen. She sees him now as a possible savior. As they travel around together, they of course fall in love.
This is a very endearing story and it was fun to read.
