New Review! Spell Book and Scandal by Jen McConnel 5 Cranky Stars
Spell Book & Scandal by Jen McConnel
5 Cranky Stars
Shelby King is a typical girl living in her older sister's shadow. Combine this teenage angst with magic, and who knows what can happen. Her sister Christina is the most powerful spell caster in their school like their father, while Shelby is a scribe like their mother. However, the spells Shelby writes always fail terribly.
This (along with the crush she has on Jeremiah Smallwood) causes Shelby to rebel and sneak out to attend illegal pop-up spell battles. In true older sister fashion, Christina tells their parents about it and Shelby is angered to the point of casting a spell (that works) with severe consequences. Can Shelby reverse the spell before it's too late?
While the story starts off a little slow, the pace picks up about mid way and really grabs your attention. The pop-up spell battles are great, and the whole magic system is detailed and very well done. The story does flow, and is easy to read. I enjoyed this book and all of the visual details made me completely ignore the slower start and give it 5 stars.
