My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 CRANKY STARS

This is one of my favorite authors, so I was excited to be reading this book. The story is hard to review without spoilers, so I’ll try to be careful. I like stories about small towns and ghosts. This one has them both. We also have romance, murder and suspense.

Erik and Eliza have been friends for years. They are both nineteen. Erik lives on his own and Eliza lives with her parents and her sister Sam. Unfortunately, Erik’s mother died when he was ten, and his father, Logan is the town bully. Logan killed his wife and spent several years in jail but now he is back. No one in town likes Erik just due to his father’s reputation. Eliza loves him and believes in him. She is certain he would never hurt her in anyway.

When Sam finds out that Eliza and Erik are engaged, she tries everything to break it up. She is sure that Erik is no good and dangerous. Suddenly, Sam dies. It was an accident but only Eliza knows what really happened. No one will believe her. Erik is sure it was his fault and the night of the wake he leaves town. Eliza is heartbroken.

Five years later, Erik’s father dies, and Erik returns to help his aunt clean up the house and finances. He is still deeply in love with Eliza, but she has turned to Roger, Miles and drugs to forget. This is where we meet ghosts and old family secrets are revealed. All in all, a very good story that I couldn’t put down.
