Aether Magic (Elements of Twilight #2)Aether Magic by Isobelle Carmichael
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 CRANKY STARS

This is Book 2 in the Elements of Twilight series. Book 1- Blood Moon Magic was an excellent story of Shifters, witches, and magic. These books must be read in order so that the story makes sense. I fell in love with the characters almost immediately and couldn’t put the first book down. Our heroine, Abigail/Abby must claim her mate at a claiming ceremony and learn to control her magic by her 21st birthday. The Shifter numbers have been falling and the claiming ceremony and the Blood Moon Rites must be successful this year. Well, Abby claims 5 men and most of the other eligible woman claim two or more. It is a very successful year in that respect. However, the chief Elder is not happy. Her goal in life is to suck all the magic out of the Shifters so that she can ascend and become a Goddess. There is also a Shifter Clan that was banned from the Rites and the book ends on a cliff hanger with that clan disrupting the ceremony. I couldn’t wait to read the next book.

So, here we are at book 2. What a disappointment. It starts out strong with some back tracking to fill in what happened at the Ceremony. Abby was able to kill the Death Claws leader and cleanse his son of the curse on his soul. However, her father, mother and the leader of the Dragon Clan disappeared into the Void. I think the storyline is about finding them and freeing them. They also must discover what has tainted Abby’s magic and heal her too. To do this, they go to the underworld to seek more power from the Siren that rules there.

This is where this book goes wrong and only gets a reluctant 3 stars from me. It seems that our Abby’s tainted magic exhausts her. The only way to rejuvenate is to have sex, with one or all five of her men at once. So, we get one or two pages of storyline and then a chapter or two of explicit sex. Then they rest and start over. By the halfway point in this book, I was ready to quit. I don’t mind the sex but enough is enough. Get on with the story. Needless to say, I skim read through the rest of the book. It ends on a cliff hanger again but I’m not sure I’ll read book 3. The storyline is great, but the sex is overdone.
