5 CRANKY STARS

Who does not like a good old-fashioned murder mystery? That is exactly what you get in this book. No actual violence as the body is discovered after the fact. This author gives us some likeable characters on an island in a really small town off the Rhode Island coast. You will find that you cannot put this down as there is constant action. When I picked this book up, I was a little worried about the fact there is a gay relationship. But there is no violence and no graphic sex, it is mentioned that the main character is gay and looking for a friendship, nothing else.

He just may find it too in the guise of the town’s police chief. So, back to the story. Ellery Page is a screenwriter from New York City. Unfortunately, he is not highly successful. When his Great, Great, Great, Great Aunt dies, he is left her rundown house and her flailing mystery bookstore. Trevor Maples is a cutthroat competitor of Ellery’s and desperately trying to buy his bookstore. Ellery has been in Pirate’s Cove for three months and enjoys the small-town atmosphere. If he can turn the bookstore around, his life will be bliss. Of course, the same night that Ellery and Trevor have an argument over not selling, Trevor ends up dead on the floor of Ellery’s bookstore. Ellery is the one to find him which makes him the prime suspect. Let me not forget to add that this small town has its very own Ms. Marple in the guise of Nora, the town historian.

Even though it is tragic, I found the story funny at times and just loved these people. A great read for the summer beach.
