New Review! Your Heart is Mine by Nicole Thorn, 3.5 Cranky Stars
Your Heart is Mine by Nicole Thorn
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Your Heart is Mine by Nichole Thorn, 3.5 Cranky Stars This was an unusual and enjoyable read. Unusual, in that the story brings romance to horror, and strangely, it works. When reading this work, I thought it was influenced by the behemoth hits, Dexter and Twilight. Dexter - in that our main male lead, Isaiah, is a man with a particular pathology. He’s adopted an ethical framework to contain his urges, and works for law enforcement. Twilight, in that it answers the question of what is worse than a vampire falling in love with you? Yeah, well, possibly a serial killer. Filled with snark and dark humor, and a horror backdrop, Your Heart is Mine is the story of Isaiah and Lynnie. He’s a Dexter type Deputy and she’s a recently arrived high school student in a town where a serial killer is in the area. Their paths cross: the predator and a vulnerable girl, bringing out something in each other. Lynnie has a penchant for getting into trouble and as Isaiah tries to protect her in the only way he knows how, the eyes of the Ripper type serial killer who has been terrorizing neighboring areas are drawn toward our duo. I actually enjoyed this book, but it is a slow burn. It took until nearly 30 percent to get into the action and I felt that the set up and pace were too slow. I’m glad, however, that I persevered because it ended up being a thoroughly engrossing read. At times, I wanted more suspense and an encounter or two – a face off, if you will – between serial killers would have added tension to the story. There are more threads and revelations to come in this series and I look forward to the next one. And… that ending. Recommended. View all my reviews
