Rook (Bridge & Sword Awakenings #1) by JC Andrijeski Review, 4 Cranky Stars

Rook (Bridge & Sword: Awakenings #1)Rook by J.C. Andrijeski
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

This book started and finished on a high and took me on a breath-taking ride!

Allie’s life had been constant and lacklustre working as a waitress in a diner, apart from that one time she was thrown in jail for assaulting her ex-boyfriend’s lover – which had been totally called for! – until she gained a stalker: Mr. Monochrome guy.

For a stalker, he was rather boring since he just sat everyday in her section at the diner not talking to her or even looking at her and simply coming in day in day out, drinking coffee and being, well, boring.

If only she had enough money to hire a “seer” who could peek into her future and possibly shake things up a bit in her mundane life. But her lowly waitressing job would never afford her to even come into speaking distance with one of those highly paid supernatural beings.

Until Mr Monochrome started talking to her and set her world upside down.

Guns blazing, hold-on-to-your-seat car chase, supernatural powers erupting from left to right, breath-taking fight scenes…you name it, you’ll find it here.

The author took me from one excitement to another with hardly a minute to recover from the previous scene. My head was reeling along with Allie as she discovered that she might not be who she thought she was. My heart also broke a few times along the way.

Revi, aka Mr Monochrome, wasn’t your typical hero or leading man. Nobody can be more tainted than him. You either love him or hate him. To be honest, I’m still not completely sure where I stood with him. But I wouldn’t exchange him with another.

The flashbacks into Revi’s life had been confusing at times, as well as made me wonder if they had been necessary for the development of the story.

The friction between Revi & Allie had been sizzling hot. My only criticism would be that it had been dragged a bit too long. The proverbial “just get on with it!” struck once more.

Having said that, there was no dull moment in this book and kept me entertained to the very end. Glad to know that this is only the beginning to a series and the next books are already available!
