Wow! I absolutely loved this story. The subject matter and setting combination seem so far out there that it couldn't possibly work... But it does! The story is set in a dystopian Victorian era where steampunk thrives. The paranormal aspect makes the story even more interesting but keeps it real enough that the reader can imagine this whole world actually coming into existence. The author gives great visuals while keeping the story moving with amazing storytelling. The whole story flows well and it was extremely hard to put down.
The main character, Christina Mera Richards, is well developed as are the important supporting characters. Christina seems like she would be an over-the-top character, but she is perfect for this whole beautifully created world. The ideas are fresh and new and nothing is predictable. There is a lot of evil-doing and corruption as well as the typical Victorian era ideals with some darkness thrown in. The bad guys are, well, really bad, and Christina has to figure out how to stop them. The romance aspect is nice in the fact that it's not too overdone and doesn't distract from the story at all. There is nothing that distracts from the overall story, and there isn't a lot of over telling of details and information. Even with so much going on in the story, it wasn't hard to keep up and be completely enveloped.
The writing itself is well done and I saw no real grammatical or flow errors. The story kept the pace the whole time with only the climax seeming a tad rushed. There aren't any unnecessary bloody scenes and the romance and language are kept clean. Overall this is an awesome book and I hope to see a sequel soon.
