My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Cranky Stars

This is the interesting start of a series. In this book we meet the main characters and learn their background information. It takes place in a small town in the land of Evendreil. The capital is Azrindal and our hero Sylas lives in Shilvrst. Shilvrst had a king but he was overthrown ten years ago. Sylas is now fourteen. The Dark wizard Maelos is evil and is trying to conquer all of Evendreil. He has walled off the small town, placed his guards on watch and everyone is forbidden to leave without permission. Each year, the living conditions deteriorate more and more. Sylas's Dad got a very low payment for his potato crop this year and this is where the story begins. Sylas is trying to think of a way to raise some more money or the family won't be able to eat all winter. He remembers an ancient tomb that he and his friends (Torren and Samara) discovered that was filled with antiques. Maybe they could find it again and sell some of the items to raise cash. They sneak out of the town early one morning to go to the cave. When they find it, they lose track of time because Sylas blacks out and they can't wake him. Luckily, the old man of the town, Uthren saves them. This is when they start studying Light Magick. Soon the group is on a quest to save the kingdom.

The action and suspense will keep you on edge as they travel across Evendreil towards the city of Gelendor. These three young teenagers are learning more about life than they ever thought was possible. This is a well written story and I look forward to reading Book 2.
