My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

Teenage boys are dumb plain and simple. Full of arrogance and hormones. Never thinking of the consequences of their dumb bets. This is a story of such arrogance. A bet that turned into more but destroyed a quiet soul in the process. It’s a story that shows the consequences of his actions. The story of Mason and Dani will make you mad and possibly give you hope that people can change.

Mason approached Dani at school about going to the Homecoming Dance with him. She doesn’t know that it’s all part of a bet between his football buddies to bag a virgin for HoCo. The weeks leading up to the dance Mason woos Dani and really starts to fall for her and she does as well. She’s cautious but feels that Mason is really showing her who he truly is outside of football and being popular. She knows she’s not his type, but she falls hard. Then the unthinkable happens and hearts are shattered. Fast forward to them being adults. He works as a bouncer at a bar and she helps struggling businesses expand. They see each other again and at first Mason isn’t sure who she is. When he finds out he sets out to explain himself to her she shuts him down. Over the course of her job at The Rusty Nail Mason tries to make her see how he’s changed and slowly chips away at Dani’s wall. It’s messy and complicated and full of revelations.

I kind of became frustrated at times with Dani. I understand her reluctance, but she annoyed me with how irrational she acted at times. Just let the man talk and then you can move on. I don’t agree with what Mason did, but he deserved to tell his story. I just wanted to shake her and say listen for five darn seconds woman. Jenni’s story made my heart sad. As a mother of a girl I hope she never encounters guys like this. I know it’s inevitable. This book isn’t all dodging and refusing to be adults about it it has it’s sweet tender moments. All in all a pretty good book.
