5 CRANKY STARS

This is the story of a young girl living with her brother, father and mother in a small town in Switzerland. Her father is mean, her mother a loving caring woman and her sixteen-year-old brother Orell is evil. No matter what the father does he only seems to squander what little money they have. One morning Valentina and her brother wake to find their parents gone. Now, as with all small towns, there are horror stories about monsters that steal people and animals on the road. Hopefully, their parents will return soon.

The author is very descriptive when telling this story. One can see the snow covered Alps and the beautiful, lush green fields. Of course, there are always woods that are as haunting as they are beautiful. In this case, there are also dwarfs living in these woods and mountains. Because they work on a farm, there isn't much time for exploring so Valentina's world revolves around her chores and selling her goods at the local town market. When her parents don't return and days turn into months, her brother becomes even less help. He'd rather drink and fritter what little money they have away. Finally, one night he pulls the last straw. When he and his drinking buddies fall asleep, Valentina steals away into the night. Little does she know, a great adventure awaits her. When the truth comes out about her and Orell, life changes forever. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat.
