New Review! The Monster's Lover by Samantha MacLeod 4 Cranky Stars
The Monster's Lover by Samantha MacLeod
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
4 Cranky Stars
I have a problem with giving more than 4 stars to a book that is really just a short story unless it was marketed as such. I absolutely loved the story and the characters. The writing and character building was done very well but if I can read it in less than 3 hours then something is missing.
This is the story of a poor farming family living on the edge of the Ironwood Forest. The forest is said to be the home of the monster wolf, Fenris. If you meet Fenris, you won’t live to tell anyone or so the tales say. Sol lives with her crippled mother and two younger brothers. Their father died a year ago while cutting wood for the king. As a result, the family is short on their quota for the taxman. The only thing of value to save them from starvation is Sol. So, it is arranged that the King will take her as a concubine in exchange for food.
Of course, this doesn’t set well with Sol and because of her status, she is unwelcome and bullied when she goes to town. She runs away into the woods to clean up in a stream before journeying home. It is by this stream that she meets a handsome young man and immediately falls for him. As his secret is exposed, she at first doesn’t believe him. When he saves her from the King, she knows she is in love.
This story would make a brilliant children’s book if the sexual content was cleaned up. It is short enough and interesting enough for a preteen to love. The author should perhaps consider this.
