Emilia didn't make friends and studied hard to get where she is in life, a damn good lawyer. She was the daughter of a mafia boss that was betrayed when she was young by a family friend named Levi. Levi wanted her father's position and he showed up one night under the ruse of joining them for dinner when he shot and killed her father. Levi turned on her and her mother, shot both of them and left them for dead. Both her and her mother survived and stayed hidden under false names. Emilia was out for revenge and playing the long game.
Dom also grew up in a mafia family. He wanted out and chose to go to school to be a lawyer to do so. While in college he meet Emilia and was attracted to her at first sight. He tried to get her to date him, but she ignored him and everyone else. Both of them on a mission.
Emilia's cousin married Levi and had a few kids, when Levi's abusive nature became to much, she went to Emilia to help her divorce Levi. Levi hired Dom to be his lawyer and after a brutal deposition, that Emilia had her assistant attend so Levi wouldn't recognize her, her cousin backs out and tells Levi who Emilia really is and that he never killer her all those years ago. Levi comes after Emilia and her mother to finish the job and Emilia finally decides to openly go for her revenge. Dom, who understands revenge better than anyone, tries to talk her out of it, but ultimately gives in and helps her get what she wants...for Levi to pay for what he did.
There is an attraction between Dom and Emilia that goes deeper than just physical. Both of them understand the struggle of leaving the mafia and how difficult it is to get back at them. The scars that cover them inside and out are signs of coming out of a battle you were never meant to survive, they are a badge of honor and survival.
The book, while well written, was a little cliche with all the legal action against the mafia type stuff. I did a few eye rolls throughout, but overall it was good.
