New Review! Dead Calm (Grave Talker #3) by Annie Anderson 4.5 Cranky Stars

Dead Calm (Grave Talker #3)Dead Calm by Annie Anderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

I mean what can I say without giving anything away. This is hard. We see two book worlds collide and Darby finds family in people she didn’t know existed until now. She was like an avenging Frodo storming to that mountain to toss the cursed object into its depths. She was an Avenger out to beat Thanos. You get my drift. She had a mission and the girl was going to achieve it. Dead Calm wasn’t without grief though, sadly Darby is no stranger too. She also experiences true love at the hands of Bishop.

Darby knows her brother is after her but isn’t sure where to start to look for him. Azarael is no help with his half truths and thinks Darby needs to do this on her own. He has basically pointed her in a general direction and bowed out. It’s with this common person that she learns what she’s really against. Let’s just say brother dearest might not be the only one who is after her. Someone wants to use Darby up and burn her out with her power to achieve the end goal.

I feel like I can say so much but I don’t want to be that person to spoil a book. Like I said there is a crossover here that I didn’t even see coming till another book. I love that Darby has people on her side. Once again, her mother may rot in pieces for eternity. I mean how can she call herself a mother? This book also broke my heart at the end. I just can’t wait to see where this series goes next.

New Review! Death Southern Style by Beverley Bateman 3.5 Cranky Stars

Death Southern StyleDeath Southern Style by Beverley Bateman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5 Cranky Stars

Julie Ann Dupre is an up and coming Interior Designer working in NYC when her beloved mother, Perrine, is murdered in her hometown of New Orleans. The police on the case, headed by Sheriff Tozer, insist that Perrine was killed in a robbery gone bad. But, Deputy Sheriff Connor O'Reilly, doesn't believe that is what happened. Connor is still trying to find out what got his father, who was also a cop, killed a decade earlier.

Julie Ann feels guilty for staying away from New Orleans for so long. "She'd let New York infect her when really everything important in life was here." She had forgotten how much she loved the music, the food, the town and the people. Maybe she should give up her life in NYC and move back home. But first, she has to find out the truth about her mother's murder.

Perrine had adopted Julie Ann when she was a baby after her birth mother died in an accident. Julie Ann decides that she needs to find out more about her birth parents in order to, hopefully, solve Perrine's murder. As she and Connor dig deeper, they find that several other witnesses to her birth have died in mysterious accidents over the years. What could be so important that people were killed to hide the truth of her birth?

As Connor works to get at the truth, Julie Ann constantly puts herself in danger, following up on leads by herself. After several close calls, she still insists on getting at the truth. "You sound like one of those too stupid to live heroines in some of the books I read."

Connor and Julie Ann begin to feel an attraction for each other, but both are determined to remain single. As they get closer to solving the mysteries of Julie Ann's past and her mother's murder, the dangers surrounding the case might keep them from ever growing closer.

Police corruption, rackeering, and voodoo play a part in this mystery, as well as otherworldy visits (maybe) from Perrine and a stray dog that might possibly be protecting Julie Ann. I especially enjoyed the many references to life in New Orleans, with local landmarks, traditions, music and food that were mentioned throughout the book.

However, the writing was a little choppy and made the book difficult to read. It really didn't flow well with so many short sentences in many places. Also, there were a lot of repetitions of clues and facts; several times, something was discovered and discussed, then it was mentioned again as if it was new several chapters later. At times, the story dragged because of this repetition.

The heroine, Julie Ann, was written as being young and naive instead of a young supposedly worldly woman with a budding career in NYC. The fact that she was adopted yet had never tried to find out more about her birth parents in her 28 years of life was a little unbelievable, in my opinion.

All in all, not a bad book, but it could have been much better. After all of the buildup to the solving of the mystery, it ended rather abruptly.

New Review! Have You Seen Me? by Alexandrea Weis 5 Cranky Stars

Have You Seen Me?Have You Seen Me? by Alexandrea Weis

Are you in the mood for a who done it merged with a teenage slasher flick with a touch of romance? Then this is for you. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who was the murderer was the whole time. When I thought I surely had it figured out I was wrong. This is my second book by this author, and she bases her books in the state of Louisiana. It’s my home state and I loved seeing it in this light. The beauty of it but the nitty gritty of the small towns.

Aubrey LaRoux is back at Waverly Prep but this time as a history teacher. Her time as a student here wasn’t the greatest so why would she go back? She’s hoping things have changed but sadly they haven’t. Sara Probst is still at the helm and ruling like a dictator. She only cares about the school’s reputation not the students. Several students have gone missing a few from the nineties and one currently and Aubrey is drawn into helping them by her first period students. Harley, London, Cal, Jenna and Bella make up her ragtag group of students determined to find out this mystery. They all have one thing in common with the current missing girl a secret they chose to keep. It’s now a race against time to figure out who is committing these acts and save themselves from certain death as well.

This book is action packed. There isn’t really a lull in the action and no real chance to catch your breath. I really felt for these students. I mean they just wanted to help a friend who brought a unique group together. Wouldn’t you want to help solve your friend’s disappearance if you could? That ending though!! PLOT TWIST. I want to say I seen it coming but I would be wrong. Also, Sheriff Mason. Hello honey! Good book and I’m glad I got a chance to read it!!

New Review! Line Mates and Study Dates (CU Hockey #4) by Eden Finley and Saxon James 4 Cranky Stars

Aww!! All it takes is one nerdy pre med student to take down a grumpy destructive hockey player. Kole and Asher are that couple. They start off rocky and as a way to help Asher study and keep his spot on the team but then love blossoms. As it always does in this case.

Asher has had a rough go at life. He is being forced to help raise his siblings with his brother West while playing hockey and going to college. He basically copes by drinking and screwing his way through the student body. Kole on the other hand is the son of the coach who once played hockey and is now pre med. He offers to help Asher bring up his grades and keep him on track for his dad. Things get muddy and maybe this brusk hockey player and this future doctor do make sense.

I've read all the books in this series and sure maybe they can be predictable but i enjoy them. Watching the characters evolve is always a ride. Another winner for me.

It was refreshing that Elora was a voluptuous beauty and not your typical waif of a woman with big boobs and picture perfect hair. She was real and honest.

Elora is a witch well part of her anyway. She is kind of an outcast to her coven because they don't know who her mother was and well while she loves her dad he doesn't always have kind words. Elora starts feeling off lately and can only be recharged by you know sexy times sadly the humans don't always respond well to her other side. One crazy potion and 4 mates later she thinks she might have discovered who she really is. It won't be easy and there is trouble on the horizon plus the possibility of another mate has her on edge.

This was refreshing and perfect for someone who wants some plot with their naughty book. Archie, Mase, Andy and Solomon are various supernatural creatures and one human. Also that plot twist at the end I'm here for it.

Book Blitz! Keeper of Souls by Harper Ray

Keeper of Souls
Harper Ray
(The Revenant Trilogy, #1)
Publication date: June 29th 2021
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal

“What would you do if Death gave you a second chance?”

Most people who escaped death were relieved, happy to be granted that second chance at life. In my case, it was more of a curse than a blessing.

Everyday I woke, I was tortured with another soul. They all wanted something from me, but I couldn’t give it to them. Instead, I ignored them. I neglected the pain they had laced beneath their hollow eyes. I dismissed the screams that shattered my eardrums every time my head hit the pillow.

The souls took pleasure in patronizing me. They were a constant reminder of why I shouldn’t have been granted a second chance.

I had managed to escape Death twice, but the third time was my undoing. He came back with a heavy vengeance. Suddenly, I was thrown into a battle between two brothers. Heaven and Hell. Light versus Dark.

They both needed me on their side, but after facing Death for the third time, I wasn’t sure I would survive the cruel fate he had planned.

EXCERPT:

Slowly, I managed to pull myself off the hard ground, and rise to a standing position. I glanced around and noticed that all the souls I had seen earlier were gone. My lips dipped into a frown. That’s weird.

“Well, things just got…interesting, didn’t they, Ace?” the guy with dark hair taunted.

Ace sighed. “Why are you here, Deagan?”

His body was radiating an un-humanly amount of heat, so I took a few steps back, looking for an exit. The animosity between these two had me ready to bolt, but for some reason, I didn’t think Deagan would let me leave that easily.

I took another step back. Deagan took a few steps forward. There was something about him that made me want to run for the hills. He was dangerous, and that cocky smirk he had plastered on his lips told me that he knew it too.

“Where do you think you’re going, sweet cheeks?” he asked.

“Away from you,” I sneered.

His brows raised. “We’ve got a feisty one here. I like it.”

I clicked my tongue and turned around to bolt in the direction towards the exit. My ear-shattering scream filled the cemetery when Deagan materialized in front of me. I glanced behind me and back to him. “How did you do that?”

His sharp gaze was full of amusement. He was getting off on being a jackass.

A hand landed on my shoulder, pushing me back as Ace stepped between us. “I suggest you leave. You have no purpose here, Deagan.” His words came out clipped, and somehow, even I felt threatened just being in his presence.

My eyes narrowed. “I don’t need you to defend me.”

Ace glanced over his shoulder, and his gaze turned to slits.

Great, now I was on his shit list too. Why the hell was I still standing here?

“Already protecting her, huh?” Deagan pursed his lips, and the temperature outside raised the humidity twenty degrees. Sweat started leaking down my forehead.

Ace’s jaw ticked.

“Did you forget what happened the last time you interfered?”

Ace whipped his head in Deagan’s direction and crossed his arms over his chest. “The real question of the hour is what you’re doing here. We both know whose territory this is.”

Deagan’s stocky body stiffened. His obsidian gaze hardened. For a brief moment, I could have sworn I saw flames dancing in the darkness of his eyes. I shook my head, I really needed to get out of here, it seemed that I was on the verge of losing my mind.

“Faith. Dirty Chai.”

I put my phone in my back pocket and moved to get my drink.

“What’s a Dirty Chai?”

I froze and my breath caught in my throat at the man’s voice behind me.

It couldn’t be. I’d been successfully dodging my ex since the move, which was a small miracle in itself. Please tell me I wasn’t about to be caught off guard with a dozen pairs of eyes watching.

But of course that’s exactly what was about to happen. It was Mason Creek after all, and it wouldn’t be home if half the town wasn’t there to witness the queen laying eyes for the first time on her rejected king.

“Hey, Faith,” Mitch said easily, although the expression in his eyes was anything but.

“Hi, Mitch,” I replied warily.

Guess my chickens had finally come to roost.
