Release Blitz! The Carver by Jacob Devlin

The Carver
Jacob Devlin
Published by: Blaze Publishing
Publication date: July 19th 2016
Genres: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Young Adult

THE GIRL IN THE RED HOOD has been looking for her mother for six months, searching from the depths of New York’s subways to the heights of its skyscrapers . . .

THE PRINCE looks like he’s from another time entirely, or maybe he’s just too good at his job at Ye Old Renaissance Faire . . .

THE ACTRESS is lighting up Hollywood Boulevard with her spellbinding and strikingly convincing portrayal of a famous fairy. Her name may be big, but her secrets barely fit in one world . . .

Fifteen-year-old Crescenzo never would have believed his father’s carvings were anything more than “stupid toys.” All he knows is a boring life in an ordinary Virginia suburb, from which his mother and his best friend have been missing for years. When his father disappears next, all Crescenzo has left is his goofy neighbor, Pietro, who believes he’s really Peter Pan and that Crescenzo is the son of Pinocchio. What’s more: Pietro insists that they can find their loved ones by looking to the strange collection of wooden figurines Crescenzo’s father left behind.

With Pietro’s help, Crescenzo sets off on an adventure to unite the real life counterparts to his figurines. It’s enough of a shock that they’re actually real, but the night he meets the Girl in the Red Hood, dark truths burst from the past. Suddenly, Crescenzo is tangled in a nightmare where magic mirrors and evil queens rule, and where everyone he loves is running out of time.

EXCERPT:

“Welcome to Sirenetta’s Diner, gentlemen. You boys ever dined here before?”

Liam cut right to the chase. “Are you Mr. Bellamy?”

The man’s face fell into a tight frown, but Crescenzo assumed by the figurine that the frown was just his natural expression. “I am he. The Lord of the Diner.”

“Violet sent us,” Crescenzo said.

“Mm. You mean Heather, yes?”

“Sure?” Crescenzo was still trying to figure out the rule on what he should be calling the Old World people. He supposed Pietro would forever be Pietro to him and he understood why he needed the new name, but he didn’t feel that somebody like Violet, who wasn’t a part of any story Crescenzo had heard before, needed an alias.

Mr. Bellamy plopped two brunch menus in front of Liam and Crescenzo and poured them each a cup of coffee, to Crescenzo’s dismay. Then the old man leaned over the counter and furrowed his eyebrows. In a tense whisper, he said, “Your presence brings ruin to my happy New World life! Where you go, trouble will surely follow. Now, what can I serve you this morning?”

Review

5 Cranky Stars

Warning you will not be able to read this book without several boxes of tissues.  This is the 5th book in the Oakville series that focuses on the Winters family.  Marcus and Taryn have been the longest married couple in the group with a six year old son.  Now that the other members are having babies, Chase is wanting a younger sibling.  They decide to expand the family but it just isn’t happening.  Taryn visits the doctor and learns shocking news that turns the Winter’s lives upside down.  Kathy-Jo does a wonderful job with this heartbreaking story over these life changing events.  The support of the gang, especially Angel bringing laughter into the scenes just at the right time helps you stop the running faucet of tears.  Life is not always sunshine and roses as we see big time in this story.
Chase is struggling after the events that have taken place with his family and is acting out in school.  Lexi, his teacher, has no other option but to call home.  Lexi moved to Oakville to escape her past and start over never expecting for her life to change as much as it does when Marcus shows up for the parent teacher conference.
This book can be read as a stand alone but you will end up with spoilers on the lives of the other members of the group.  Holly shows her protectiveness of Taryn and not ready to accept Lexi into the fold as easily as the others.
I wasn’t able to put this book down as it is the case with all of Kathy-Jo’s books.  She loves making us cry and this one does not fail.  You will also find some great laughs as well as suspense and unexpected twist.  She does a great job in keeping the story very real with issues that people don’t like to discuss in books, but this is one of the reasons why this book is so great.
I’m sad to see the series coming to an end but I do hope that she will revisit with this group in her spin off series.

After growing up in Saranac Lake, a small town in upstate NY, Kathy-Jo Reinhart returned to her birth place and where she spent her summers with her grandparents, St. Petersburg, Florida, after graduating High School. The sub zero climate and piles of snow definitely weren’t a loss, in her opinion, and this is where she still resides with her Husband of fifteen years and their eleven year old son, who they lovingly refer to as their miracle baby. A name righteously earned after a very difficult and scary pregnancy with 7 1/2 months on complete bed rest.
By day, she works as an Office Manager for a construction company started by her grandfather and uncle. Like most people, she has a love hate relationship with her job, but cherishes all the years she was able to work side by side with her grandfather before he passed away.
Writing has always been something that she has loved. In school, creative writing was her favorite class. Writing a book was something she had always wanted to do, but was too afraid she didn't have what it took to make it happen. After going from working sixty hours a week to twenty, she found herself with a lot of extra time on her hands and decided it was time to take the leap. Crossing her fingers and closing her eyes, she jumped into creating the Oakville series and hasn’t looked back.
The first five star review she received after First Love, the first book in the Oakville series, was published, left her speechless, overwhelmed with emotion, and so blown away that someone really liked what she had written. Her initial fears seemed to calm and reassured her that others love her writing just as much as she loves doing it. How it will all turn out, still remains a mystery, but she’s having a blast seeing where these characters will take her.
When she isn’t spending time with her characters, she enjoys reading, spending time with her family, scrapbooking, and doing ancestry research.

Other Books In the Series

Book #1: Through The Fire

Life could have been different for Evie Meyers. If only she wasn’t a freak.

She wouldn’t be hiding from the Rain, a secret organization intent on destroying all supernatural creatures. Neither would she have run from Clay, the object of her desire.

Her hope for love and a normal life shattered when Clay stumbled onto her biggest secret and revealed one of his own in the process—he’s a soldier for the Rain. Learning that Clay was a threat to her survival, Evie had no choice but to flee.

Now Clay’s back—battle-scarred and mysterious—and the attraction between them is undeniable. Stuck on opposite sides in the war between humans and the supernatural, there seems little hope for a happily ever after. Caught between what her heart wants and what her head knows, something has to give. What will she choose? And what price will she have to pay?

New Review! Unjustly Destroyed by Marie Skye, 4 Cranky Stars

Unjustly Destroyed (Incapable, #2)Unjustly Destroyed by Marie Skye
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

**** 4 Cranky Stars ****

I feel the very first thing I need to say is that this is a very dark read, for adults only. The book contains very explicit content, on many different levels.

The tamest of these is the BDSM content, and there is absolutely nothing tame about that. Since the whole 50 Shades phenomena, I have read so much more about domination and submission than I ever thought I would, but this book goes more deeply into that than probably any other I have read. Quite frankly, I am ready for a new trend (and for the love of all things cranky, not the stepbrothers trend either) but I will not hold that against this author, or any other than delves into the s and m arena. This one is definitely well written on that front, and quite creative. While I am issuing what has become fairly standard warnings in my reviews, and while skirting any potential spoilers, I will add that almost any potential trigger warning I have ever seen addressed does come up within these pages.

The second thing to address is that this is the second book in what I believe is to be a trilogy, and it is not really a stand alone. I suppose you could read it as such, but I would highly recommend reading Ms. Skye's Incapable first. As it was Unjustly Destroyed that came to us for review, I almost did that, but am glad the author/publisher/PR team (not sure who presented it) suggested that Incapable be read first. I am pretty convinced that having not read these together in the order they were intended would have left me despising the hero, Grayson Mandrake, and he doesn't deserve that. He really is a pretty good guy, but mainstream he certainly is not (unless your idea of mainstream is dominant billionaire, which for some readers I can understand if they have begun to feel that way - sorry, I am digressing into my curmudgeonly rants, and this series should not be judged on that.)

Emmalin Ross is our heroine, and assuming you have read Incapable as well, you know that she has not led an easy life, but she has done a fine job of moving past all of the obstacles that have been her path in life almost since birth. Poor thing, as much as she would deserve it, I can't say that there has been any real change in that trend in this addition to her story. As I mentioned, this is a dark read, but if anyone deserves a happily ever after, it is this girl! I also mentioned that this is the second of what I believe to be a trilogy, so, that does mean that we will have to wait at least one more book until we find out if she finally gets one. As much as my feelings on these books have gone up, down and sideways, I will be pretty eagerly waiting to find out if she ever gets one.

I would say this book also falls into the thriller category as well as dark romance. Emmalin can not seem to escape the demons of her past. The editing is well done, and I found few if any errors, and they were not enough to take me out of the book over. I always appreciate that, especially when I have been in a slump of books that I can't say that about lately so it is definitely appreciated. I would recommend for those sure they can handle a very dark and explicit read.
