Mature YA/New Adult Contemporary Romance

Drummer Girl
A mature YA/New Adult contemporary rock star romance by Ginger Scott

Arizona Wakefield was a beat without a melody. Living a half-breathing life in a half-finished neighborhood with parents who always wore half-hearted smiles, the high school senior only had one thing that let her color outside her family’s perfectly drawn lines—her drums.

Jesse Barringer was a song without a chorus. The son of a washed-up rock star who’s also one hell of a deadbeat dad, he was given two things from his father—musical genius and a genetic link to the bipolar disorder that drives him mad.

One night in a garage at the end of a cul-de-sac in the middle of a bankrupt California neighborhood, Jesse’s melody found Arizona’s rhythm. An angry boy with storm-colored eyes found a blonde angel in Doc Martens with missing lines in her own story. Where her rhythm stopped, his words took over, and together, they wrote one hell of a story.

** Drummer Girl is a mature YA/New Adult romance that touches on mental health, drug abuse and includes mature sexual situations.

“That’s the first time I’ve played that song. I like it. We should add it to our set,” he says, pulling the strap from around his neck before setting his guitar at the foot of his bed. “What do you think?”
He twists so our knees are touching and our shoulders are squared.
“I think you’re a showoff, one. And two…I totally think we should close with that at our gig. People love retro shit like that at shows.” I don’t really know what people like at shows because the only kinds I’ve ever been to have been for high school marching nerds or jazz geeks. I probably don’t even deserve to utter the word gig yet. I’m a gig virgin. I do know movies, though, and if this life was a movie, our band would close with that.
Jesse’s eyes linger on my face, making me warm.
“Okay then,” he says, finally. “And I’m not a showoff.”
His lips pucker with his smirk and mine follow suit until a laugh seeps through.
“You so are!” I shove at him playfully, and his hands wrap around my wrists and shove back gently but don’t let go.
“No, I’m a great example. That’s a totally different thing,” he says, pulling me toward his chest until my fingertips meet the hard surface of his pecs under a well-worn white T-shirt.
“I’m pretty sure it’s just a synonym for showoff how you’re using it. In fact, now you’re just being arrogant!” I gripe back through laughter, a wry smile playing at one side of my mouth. Jesse remains quiet, though. His head leaned a tick to the right. My lips vibrate with this sudden change in atmosphere, and without even helping myself, I bite my bottom lip. There is just enough light in the room to see these small things we’re doing, these…signs. At least, I’m giving a sign. I hope I’m not imagining Jesse’s.
At least three full breaths pass between us without words. I count mine, and I guess how many he takes because really, I can’t see much beyond the dark centers of his eyes and the top curl of his lip. I wait for him. Even though I’m dizzy and happy and excited, I don’t want to be eager and desperate. I wait for him to move closer…to do something.
I wish for him.

“Would it be okay if I kissed you now?”

New Review! Unlucky in Love (Hotline Hookup Collection) by Cary Hart 4.5 Cranky Stars

UnLucky in LoveUnLucky in Love by Cary Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

Ok I will admit the first chapter I was like lord Clover is naïve and gullible then Jeffrey and his useless self happened and Clover became my favorite person. She may be naïve and meek but man did she go off which lead us to the best 53 plus dates ever and Clover finding her one true love.

Clover Kelly has a binder of how her life is supposed to play out every step and every goal and she thinks because she’s been with Jeffrey for six years he’s her one. On paper he’s perfect in real life not so much. When the inevitable happens, Clover unleashes on him and grabs Kramer her barking cockatoo and flees to her friend Austin’s house. She finds solace in Austin and starts to mend her somewhat broken heart. When she unloads all her problems to him at the radio station where he works, she doesn’t realize she just pressed a button to broadcast and thus Unlucky in Love was born. Clover is set to go out on a speed dating round and then narrow it down to four lucky guys. They range from a guy who motorboats her to a guy who was just using her. Trust me it’s all very bad. It’s slowly over this time that Clover realizes maybe she’s been looking in all the wrong places.

Austin Montgomery is Dr Feelgood a radio host who discusses sex and relationships on the radio. He doesn’t have a memory that doesn’t include Clover Kelly. Despite his easy ways with women he hasn’t found the one. When Unlucky in Love is born thanks to his producer Owen, he is against it. He doesn’t want to watch someone he cares about throw herself out there like that, but he does and it’s the biggest trainwreck ever. Each and every time he is there to pick up the pieces and feed her ice cream and wine. He starts to realize he might just love Clover and starts to sabotage her dates. When he finally comes to the true realization, he hopes he’s not too late to go from unlucky in love to lucky in love.

I loved Austin and Clover. They are unconventional but they fit. They always say opposites attract and in this case it did. I wanted to burn Clovers binder in an epic bonfire. I couldn’t imagine adhering to something so adamantly like she did. I loved her best friends CJ and Mallory. Every girl needs friends like that. I can relate to Clover on the Google front because yep Google always has my back. We have this image as Austin as this womanizer but I like how he redeemed himself when it came to that. If you like laughs, a cockatoo named Kramer who just like his Seinfeld namesake has crazy hair and an even crazier attitude, pervy dates, sexual chemistry that’s off the charts and love sweet love I suggest you pick up this book. Cary Hart is truly finding her way in the romcom world of books.

New Review! Game Changer by Sylvie Stewart 5 Cranky Stars

Game ChangerGame Changer by Sylvie Stewart
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Cranky Stars

This book was freaking awesome! From quotes shared from Cookie Rutledge to Poppy James herself I couldn't stop laughing. This author is a genius.

Poppy has the chance to land the job of her dreams but it means moving away from Savannah Georgia and her family. On the plus side she will also get a break from Bobby Lee.

Moving to New York is a dream come true and once she stumble upon Mac her heart is home. Mac is a man's man and a man of few words but he melts Poppy with just a look.

This story is a good lesson in Karma and family. Puppy's character is quirky and cute and Murphy's Law definitely applies to her. I loved all of the laughter but also the warm fuzzies that came with this book.

I will definitely be stalking this author and you should too.

New Review! Defying Gravity by K.K. Allen 5 Cranky Stars

Defying GravityDefying Gravity by K.K. Allen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Cranky Stars

My heart went on a rollercoaster with this book. Just when I think things were leveling out and the ride was going smoothly another lie made your heart drop. It’s not all lies though. Amelia and Tobias are defying gravity. They say a perfect solar system can’t exist, but Amelia and Tobias are damn near perfect if only they can get past all the hurdles in their way.

Amelia has always dreamed of being an NBA dancer. She has always wanted to stand in the center of the court and do what she loves the most and that’s dance. She’s always took notice of Tobias but as a promise she made to Trinity she never took that chance. If you read Falling from Gravity, then you know what happened there. Fast forward to Tobias and Amelia keeping their relationship a secret because in her mind their relationship had an expiration date. He was off to the NBA and she had a career in dance. Her journey isn’t without ups and downs and loads of self-doubt and horrible self-image at the hands of an NBA dancing coach. She has kept in touch with Tobias until one fated night that she walked away to focus on herself and the next step in her life. Now they are back in each other’s orbit and she knows that maybe just maybe they are really meant to be and she will do whatever it takes to keep it that way.

Tobias was dealt a huge blow in Falling from Gravity. He is still adrift and has no idea where his career is going. When he is drafted to play for a minor league basketball group in Chicago, he realizes this is his chance to prove himself but it’s also a sure-fire way to get his heart broken with Amelia. He tries for the long distance with her, but she closes herself off. He doesn’t want to stand in her way of her dreams, so he finds a way to move on. He keeps tabs on her and tries to put himself in her path. His one and only goal has always been to make it back to L.A. and when he lands on a professional team that is where he goes. His life is still in turmoil, but he will do anything to get Amelia back and even lie to the team and sneak behind backs to get there. When his past collides with his present, he knows with Amelia by his side he can do anything.

Y’all!! I loved Tobias and Amelia. They are real people with real problems. K.K. Allen made them seem so relatable. That driving desire to know where you came from that driving desire to want to achieve your goals. The people that will tear you down and how it affects your mental stability like it did Amelia. I loved that their relationship in a lot of ways was just simple. Back of the truck camping staring at the stars real. I was angry with Trinity. I understood her crankiness but come on you don’t own the guy he’s your brother. She was rude for lack of a better word. I just couldn’t wait for this story and I had to devour it slowly cause I didn’t want it to end. This is a story that stretches years and K.K. Allen did a nice job of making that a reality you didn’t feel like there was chunks of time missing but you also didn’t feel like it was so much story. It was a perfect blend. We also got to see some characters from Center of Gravity and I hope a certain someone gets a story as well. If you love stories of dancers and ball players then this is for you!!

New Review! Lizzie Borden by Elizabeth Engstrom 3 Cranky Stars

Lizzie BordenLizzie Borden by Elizabeth Engstrom
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 CRANKY STARS

I was really looking forward to reading this book. However, it turned into a very tedious read. Historical fiction should be a little more exciting to read. Many of the events were repeated over and over from chapter to chapter which was confusing and time wasting. The concept was very good, showing Lizzie as mentally ill since a young age because of her sister’s abuse. In fact, even sister Emma was mentally ill. Why else would Lizzie have killed her family? Perhaps if the author had included more about the aftermath and trial, it would be more interesting.

This author portrays this whole family as mentally ill. She constantly writes about how poorly they live even though the father is a shrewd businessman. They live in a weirdly configured house with no second-floor plumbing. A disagreement with an employee has Mr. Borden overly protective, thus all doors are always locked. The food situation is borderline starvation except for baked goodies and cookies.

Thus, poor Lizzie who wants for more freedom and normality becomes somewhat rebellious. She took a six-week trip to Europe with church friends and befriended an English lady. They correspond on a regular basis, while Lizzie mopes about her terrible living conditions. Things just drive Emma and Lizzie to their wits end when good old Dad threatens to change his will. It took forever to get to this point in the book and several times I was tempted to just quit reading. As I said before, it is too drawn out with too much unnecessary info that is often repeated. If you are not comfortable with homosexuality there is a tiny amount. This book was just not for me.

New Review! Work Violation (Cook Brothers #2) by BJ Harvey 4.5 Cranky Stars

Work Violation (Cook County #2)Work Violation by B.J. Harvey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

Veronica “Ronnie” Nelson gave up a lucrative career and took a chance on something she has always wanted to do. She is done with pleasing her parents and started taking courses for graphic arts with a side study of photography. Life is better than good but now how does she get Jaxon Cook in her bed? She knows he notices her and vice versa the girl is sending signals out loud and clear but Jax just finds excuses to run. Until one night at a party and liquor is flowing, they collide. This is the beginning of Jax and Ronnie. She never told him she was in his class so imagine his surprise. Ronnie always being one step ahead of everything, already filed a document with the college about their non fraternization policy claiming she was in a relationship with Jax and now it’s go time. She will use her wiles and her smart mouth to hook this handsome man.

Jaxon Cook has always noticed Ronnie. From the first day he caught her and April and Aprils ex mother in law sitting on their porch watching him and his brothers. When he learns that his older brother is pursuing April, he puts Ronnie on the back burner not wanting to cause problems. Things are going good in his life. He has an adjunct professor position at the same college as his twin Bryant, his photography career is taking off and he’s helping his brothers with their house flipping business. He keeps making excuses for dodging Ronnie but when Bryant lights a fire under his butt he makes the leap. He isn’t expecting her in his class, and he knows then and there that Ronnie is who he wants in his life. He goes after her slow and steady. He dates her and treats her like a gentleman everything is perfect.

I have loved Jaxon since the last book. He just seems like a fun guy to be around and well I wish I could be as ballsy as Ronnie yet she’s very vulnerable. They are a good match. This book isn’t just the sprint to the finish line of sex and falling in love there is a conniving little witch in his class. The sexy times are steamy and their dirty talk will make your kindle fog up. I just loved everything about Jax and Ronnie. That Vegas trip and the mess they made April wear was hilarious. I can’t wait for the next story while I’m excited for Bryant I think I want Cohens story the most. He is a mystery. I will be going to Amazon to track down more of BJ Harveys work.

Excerpt Reveal and One Week Countdown Countdown! Hard Line (Crossing Lines #3) by A.D. Justice

HARD LINE (Crossing Lines #3) by A.D. Justice Release Date: August 2nd

Blurb: My rule: Never let an old flame burn you twice.
Other people gave second chances—I didn’t. My modus operandi was to move on to the next girl in line and forget the previous one.
So when Tawnee Milano said she needed her space, I let her go. Then I left our mutual employer for a new job with the CIA and didn’t look back.
But a coded distress message from her sends me right back to where I was when we first split up. The possibility of losing her forever forces me to relax my rigid stance. With her life in danger, I’m finally facing my true feelings for her.
Mottos are all fine and good in theory. Not so much in practice.
Now my hard line policy is to get her back—and keep her this time.

Excerpt: “Listen, I’m going to tell you this one last time as your friend. If you’re my friend, you need to listen to what I have to say because I’m as fucking tired of repeating myself as I am of hearing you repeat yourself.
“One. It’s time for you to face the truth.”
“Two. You are not over being dumped.”
“Three. You’re not over her moving halfway around the world and never calling you to say goodbye when she left the country.”
“Four. You are nowhere near being over Tawnee.”
“Five. You’re in love with the woman. Still. To this very day. If she walked into this bakery right now and said she wanted you back, you’d jump for fucking joy. And so would I, because at least you’d have a new fucking story to tell.”
Blake bites into his bagel, tearing it with excessive force, and glares at me over his coffee cup.
“That’s ridiculous. How do you get that from what I just told you?”
“Because I’m not a fucking moron, Roman. Unlike you. That’s how.”
“You’re so full of shit. I don’t give second chances, Blake. One and done—that’s how I manage my relationship issues. Plain and simple. No fuss, no muss. No complications. No baggage. No unresolved issues.”
“Yeah, I got it, man. You’re still full of shit, for the record. I stick by my original statement and assessment of you.”
We walk out of the restaurant and stroll down the street, keeping our target in sight without giving away our position.
My phone vibrates with an incoming text, so I fish it out of my pocket and quickly glance at the screen. My attention is on my mark, but when I glance down at the screen, I forget all about my mission.
I forget about my job.
I forget about my mark. I forget why I’m following him.
After three long years, Tawnee has sent me a message. But it’s not just any message. To anyone else, it appears to be a string of letters and numbers with no discernible pattern. But I know better. I recognize the secret code on sight. With a quick copy and paste into our own software program and our specific key, I decode the message and nearly let my phone slip through my fingers when I read what it says.
