New Review! Reinventing Devin by K.A. Graham 4.5 Cranky Stars

Reinventing DevinReinventing Devin by K.A. Graham

4.5 Cranky Stars

You might remember Devin and Jackson from Micah and Quinn’s story. The messy friend who acted like her life was just peachy when she was around her friends and the guy who once tutored her and stole her heart. It’s in these pages we find out who Devin truly is and why she came to be such a hot mess.

Devin has been bullied her whole life and her parents are about as useless as they come. You can imagine this has caused the perfect storm in her life. She is spiraling then she meets Jackson and things start looking up. Then in true Devin’s life is a crap storm fashion that relationship faulters. Now her nights are booze and nameless guys and her core friends that keep her sane ish until Jackson reenters her life. He gives her purpose and lets her know he will never give up on her. He believes in her and hopes he has enough conviction to make her see that she is a good person.

While yes, this novella was a journey it also had that naughty K.A. Graham spark. Devin communicates best with her body it seems. Jackson is a good guy despite his upbringing but rose from those ashes. At times I felt connected to Devin. I seen my young 20s self in her actions. Just one thing to another with no real thought behind them. That’s a sign of a good story in my book. If you can make connections to characters you know those characters, come from a place of experience. Another solid story from this author.

New Review! Grave Robbing and Other Hobbies (Grave Consequences #1) by Jayce Carter

Grave Robbing and Other HobbiesGrave Robbing and Other Hobbies by Jayce Carter

4 Cranky Stars

This book had a lot going on. I know there are four guys with their sights set on Ava and that they are trying to track an absolute evil entity, but it was still a lot. The juggling of men and then trying to find out who she really was and tell the story so at times I was unsure what was happening. I like reverse harem books and I’m guessing that is what this is. Yet I did enjoy this story and the characters in it.

Ava is certain her only skill is she can see and talk to the dead. Unlike say a medium she can go a little more in depth with the dead. She lives an insanely normal life, and she likes it that way heck she even chose a job that is the epitome of boring as an insurance salesman. She has no romantic prospects, and her only friend seems to be Gran and possibly Troy next door. One night a vampire shows up, then a hellhound (who is human passing) a mage and Troy. This is where her life takes a turn and she’s now chasing evil with these men by her side. Yes, there is attraction but who Is Ava supposed to be with and how will she defeat the mist?

Ava is a real character. She has the spunk and the smart mouth, and she seems human. I’m assuming this book was more world and story building than anything. There were some spicy parts that made me want to grab a fan. Lawd have mercy. I really like Troy and Hunter. I do hope Kase and Grant can redeem themselves. All in all, a solid introduction to a new world where I hope everything comes together and Ava gets her answers.

Lightning streaked across the sky, backlighting the eighteen-year-old goddess as she stood silhouetted against the maelstrom outside. Her auburn hair was wind-whipped and plastered to her neck and face, and though newly reborn, her divinity was something she could never hide … at least not from me.

“How far is it to the temple?” she asked.

“Five hours, but hopefully, you can get some sleep along the way. You’ll need your energy for when we arrive.”

Gaia pulled her jean jacket over her soaked cotton tee and followed me from the room. She was oblivious of the Crags and their intent to kill her, and it was my job––and my punishment—to keep it that way. To protect her from everything … even knowing they exist. After losing my own daughter, and the training I’d forced myself through, this was a task I would not fail again.

Ho. Lee. Forking. Shirtballs. I didn’t see that coming like not at all not even a little bit. Maybe I should have picked up on it but I didn’t. When I got to that moment and if you read it you know my mouth dropped open. Kudos girl you pulled a fast one. You also ripped my darn heart out for a bit as well. I want to be like Sloane when I grow up.

Sloane is just getting used to having a team at her back. She doesn’t know what to make of her newfound life but she’s adjusting. She is still out there seeking answers and kicking butt while doing it. When a mysterious letter appears only signed from X she knows she has been found. Now Sloane must protect her new family while learning the truth about herself. On top of all that is her burgeoning relationship with Bastian. She learns he is the most important person in her life, and she would follow him to Hell and back if she must.

Once again didn’t see that coming and I’m here for it. This should be epic and I’m excited to see how the author pulls this off. I’ll say it again I love Bastian. I mean the man is a mountain with a giant heart. The whole crew is amazing and even bone kitty Isis. I can’t wait for book three to see how this all weaves together.

I wouldn't really classify this as a book per se. It is a short novella in my mind and only took about 2 hours to read. I enjoyed the descriptions of the area as I know it well. Fun thing about history is that if you grew up in the surrounding area, you feel at home.

The story takes place during the Revolutionary War in small town New York's Mohawk Valley. Not only did the residents have to fear wild animals but the Indian tribes of that time were still sometimes violent. This war also pitted neighbor against neighbor as some felt that this country should stay under the rule of the British King. It's about a young girl coming of age in this world. Her mother dies in childbirth and she feels to blame. Her older brothers go off to war and her younger brother wants to join them. Her first stepmother is brutal to her but she feels to blame for that too. Her father refuses to leave his custom clock business for the safety of the city. They fall prey to the perils of the war in many ways. It was a harsh brutal war and many friends are either displaced or killed. Even the survivors that head to the fort for safety aren't truly safe.

I only gave it 4 stars because of the way it is written. The author switches between present day stories to memories without any warning. I was then left to figure out which was now, and which was then. It dragged the story down. If she had delineated the difference with a different typeface, it would have worked better. All in all it was a well researched piece of history.

I love John Wick and I guess by default I now love Damien Vetrov. I also don’t love having my heart ripped out multiple times in one book but here I am. How much loss can one woman endure? Seriously my heart hurts for Winter Hemsley.

Winter Hemsley is the Blood Princess. Her family deals in blood diamonds from Africa. She attends St. Monarch’s not to learn her family business but instead she wants to learn combat. She has a blood feud to settle, and she wants it to be her bullet. She isn’t expecting to meet Damien Vetrov. Winter has heard scary stories of the Vetrovs but she hopes to become better than him. Damien has his life planned out. He will work beside Carson in the family business he surely didn’t want to bother with Winter. He doesn’t do attachments but something about this girl calls to him. When tragedy befalls St. Monarch with Winter at the center of it he knows his job is now to protect the beautiful Blood Princess. Winter accepts her fate and having Damien around she finds she just might not be so fallible.

I’m bringing up John Wick again because this book was like young John is like and if he trained at an academy and St. Monarch is the Continental. This book was action packed for sure. Firefights and fighting for lives. It also has heart at its core. Two unlikely foes coming together. Also grab a fan because these two can burn up the pages. I can’t wait for future books!!

New Review! Guarding Shadows (Save Me #5) by Aly Stiles and Hazel James 5 Cranky Stars

Guarding Shadows (Save Me, #5)Guarding Shadows by Aly Stiles
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Cranky Stars

“I’d rather sit with you in your darkness than be alone in the light.” I mean seriously?? Swoon. Who doesn’t want someone who is willing to sit in the dark with you when things are bad? Who doesn’t want someone who will love you despite the shadows? I know many who would. We all crave that interaction that connection to someone who chooses to love you every day without regrets. This is the story of Quinn, a rising star and Tanner, a medically retired army sergeant who is trying to make it on the outside.

Tanner lives in the shadows. All he’s ever really known is the Army and he had no plans of retiring so young. I guess being injured and enduring a catastrophic loss will do that to you. During one of his final tours, he meets Quinn. She is an upcoming rock star and human sunshine. She brings some light to Tanner's dire existence. Quinn can’t forget the handsome Army Sergeant that showed her around base and a small town. She has stored those memories away for when she’s on the road. When Tanner finds himself back stateside and struggling a friend throws him a ticket to see Detour Wylder which is Quinn’s new band. It’s here they reconnect, and Quinn offers him an opportunity of a lifetime and a lifeline he desperately needed and in return he gives Quinn the bravery and drive to take her band to the next level.

Seriously!! My heart!! It broke a few times for Tanner. I don’t have any experience with how the armed forces treat their veterans but it’s sad how they do according to Guarding Shadows. You see Aly Stiles and Hazel James have a story in the beginning on how this story was written and it’s nothing short of amazing. They weaved past bands and past worlds and real life experiences into this book. I loved Tanner and Quinn reminded me of my daughter with her optimism and sunshine personality. I also don’t wish a happy ever after for Donovan and Muffin you can suck it. I even liked the band and all their quirky members. Once again another winner in my book.

New Review! Guiding Gaia by Tish Thawer 5 Cranky Stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It takes place in today's world on Earth. The premise is that the world is in danger and Gaia, the Mother, Creator of all living things has been reborn to determine if her world is still worthy of life.

The story is basically told by Demi, the woman who must teach Gaia about the modern world and accompany her while she retrieves her seven hidden treasures. Sounds easy, right?? No such luck. It soon becomes Demi's job to save them from creatures called Crags, who are bent on stealing the treasures and ending the quest. Demi isn't sure why they were sent after them or by whom. As they travel from country to country retrieving the treasures, Demi is dealing with Gaia in the form of a moody teenager. Problem is, when too upset, Gaia's emotions trigger severe weather phenomena. Watching for Crags and Gaia's storms make this is a very tiring endeavor. Then when they get to Antarctica, Gaia falls for one of the geologists. Now they have a civilian trailing around with them. However, he has a way of calming her so Demi agrees to let him accompany them.

I realize the plot sounds strange but it was really a good storyline. It took a couple of chapters to figure out what was going on but then the pace picked up. Add this title to your to be read list and you can't go wrong.

Books whisper to Beatrix Alba. But they aren’t the reason she has never fit in. Bullied at home and school, she keeps a secret—a power of violence and darkness.

To succeed, he needs a riddle in Beatrix’s possession.

Author Bio:

Alicia has a weak spot for happy endings and transformative journeys. She spent her teenage years
in Argentina and Europe, speaks several languages and loves to travel.

An eclectic reader, she grew up on a diet ranging from Lucy M. Montgomery and Jane Austen to Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Raymond Chandler, Hermann Hesse, Jorge Luis Borges, and many classics. She's never been cured of reading a bit of everything and is as likely to geek out about Mr. Darcy as Dr. Who.

She is a history and astronomy aficionado, who walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain, completed her Masters in the Netherlands and worked for Google in Ireland. She decided to become a writer at six but took a full, winding road here. Along the way, she learned if there’s one thing that cuts across cultures, one unifying thread that pulls everyone together, it's a good story.

A big-city girl, she now lives in the Midwest, where she occasionally picks apples and pretends witches exist.
