Book Tour! Hybrid Magic by Cristy L. Bowlin

Hybrid Magic
by Cristy L. Bowlin
Genre: YA Fantasy

Two nations joined peacefully as one, but a band of assassins lurks in the shadows.

Magic isn’t uncommon in the Deravine Commonwealth, where people can be gifted with the faculties of combat, healing, transformation, or sight. Yet as a hybrid mage, Aaron Ztrong’s abilities aren’t so easily categorized. He managed to save his parents during a dangerous confrontation when he was only a young boy, and now a decade later most people in his life expect him to do remarkable things with his powers. Then there are those who fear what Aaron and others like him can do. When Aaron’s life is threatened by a group calling themselves the Defenders, he takes refuge with two other hybrid mages and the teacher who is training them to enhance their abilities. As the Defenders continue to hunt down hybrid mages, Aaron and his new companions must find a way to survive.

Cristy L. Bowlin grew up in Ventura County, CA where she spent most of her free time ballet dancing and reading fantasy books. She got her BA in English with an emphasis in creative writing and a minor in dance from the California Polytechnic State University. She then received her MA in English with a minor in gender and women's studies from the University of Kentucky. She currently lives with her husband, daughter, and cat in Southern California where she is a college English professor. Malcolm

They say opposites attract, but I never understood the phrase until Leni Abbott walked into my office—or more specifically—into my office bathroom, while I was naked. Even as the pink stained her cheeks and she stuttered to speak, I was completely intrigued. She’s unlike anyone I’ve met before and, wildly enough, seems immune to my charms.

She also has a son. A young five-year-old boy, Trace, who blindsides me with his toothless grin and worms his way into my heart.

Together, they make me feel things. Things I’ve never expected. This single mom might not know it, but she could be everything I never knew I wanted.

Leni

I’ve heard all the rumors about Malcolm Wright, the playboy mayor with a trail of broken hearts left in his wake. I try to resist him, really I do, but he’s always there with those devastatingly gorgeous eyes and a sexy smile full of wicked intent. When he hires my business to clean his impressive house, I know I should stay away, yet find my resolve slipping.

Then he meets my son. I fully expect him to run for the hills, but that doesn’t happen. In fact, being near Trace only seems to draw Malcolm and I closer.

Now there are two hearts on the line as I put my trust and faith into the one man in Mason Creek who may not be able to give his own heart in return.

New Review! Ruthless Saints by Michelle Heard 5 Cranky Stars

Ruthless SaintsRuthless Saints by Michelle Heard
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Cranky Stars

I think this one is my favorite so far. I mean what's not to love about Carson Koslov? An assassin with a heart of gold but don't tell him that. For all his bad he does good too. Him and Hailey are night and day. The sun and the moon gravitating toward each other sounds like imminent doom but it works.

Carson was ok with his solitary life. He's a trained assassin that's all he's ever known. Not to form attachments he wasn't expecting Hailey. The girl with the smile that lights his world on fire. He tries desperately to keep his distance but she works her way in. Hailey was immediately attracted to Carson. Despite his quiet surly nature she just assumed he was a recluse. She falls for him slowly but all at once. She has no clue about his life and before he has a chance to tell her his job comes knocking on their door.

Arghh. Ok yes this is my favorite one. I like that she's so normal and well he's not. It does have its heart stopping moments and you really feel for Hailey. Yet for all the bad its such a good love story with sexy times. I can't wait for what's next.

New Review! Cursed (Enchanted Gods #1) by K.K. Allen 4.5 Cranky Stars

Cursed (Enchanted Gods #1)Cursed by K.K. Allen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

When I heard K.K. Allen was coming out with a new book and it was fantasy, I was on board since that’s been my go-to genre lately. In Cursed is a world building book. It sets the stage for Katrina and her discovery in Apollo Beach and Summer Manor. It’s where the next phase of her life begins after tragedy strikes. It’s where she finds family she never met and possibly a boy.

Kat Summers has always felt different but more so lately. It’s like her thoughts are out of control and causing some strange reactions. She lives a simple life with her mother and I just trying to get by. When she is expelled from school it sets off a chain reaction of tragedy. When she finds herself in Apollo Beach living with a grandmother she never met even stranger things start happening. She just wants to finish school and move on to start her life anew. She slowly starts to like the beach and feels a connection to it. Alec the neighbor isn’t so bad either. She might just make a life for herself here but when she turns 18 Kat changes and her grandmother helps her on her journey of self discovery.

I really liked this book. I’m curious to see where Kat ends up and everyone’s role, especially Johnny. This book has a little something for everyone. I really liked Charlotte and how she’s kind of a built-in confidant to Kat and Rose. That ending though! Who’s responsible? So many questions that I hope are answered in the next book.

New Review! Devil's Intern by Jayme Phelps 4 Cranky Stars

Devil's InternDevil's Intern by Jayme Phelps
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

In the Devil’s intern, you meet Anna, who is soulless, meaning she sold her soul to the Devil, but gets to remain on Earth after her death. Soulless are extremely rare in the supernatural world. However, Anna is not entirely happy about her situation, since she cannot leave the city limits, stopping her from visiting her family. Anna works as a bartender at Idir, a bar owned by Matt, her lover (and fairie). She rents a room at a church, which is ironic considering her soul situation. Anna seems to have trouble following her wherever she goes, no matter how much she tries to avoid it. She also has this cool power that comes with being soulless, where she can absorb someone else’s magic for a short time after touching them.

The story flowed pretty seamlessly, and I found myself wanting to read more to see what happens next, finishing the book within a few days after starting it. I could have read it more quickly, but adulting interfered.

The characters were believable (for supernatural beings ;) ). I would have liked a little more backstory for a few of the characters, but that could always be shared in future books in the series. Matt, her lover, boss, and fairie, is a kind, caring character who wants to support Anna despite the problems that seem to follow her. Nate, a shifter in hiding, is her friend and coworker at Idir, who is responsible for Anna meeting Rachel, a witch who has had her powers lessened due to being on probation for not following the rules. Rachel becomes one of Anna’s friends by accident after Anna saves her from an attack. Rachel sticks her neck out to save Anna from being sent to the Prism (a supernatural jail). Silas, the devil himself, is portrayed just as I would assume he would be; slick, sly, and conniving. Stephen is the gorgeous blonde reaper who made the contract for Anna’s soul after an unfortunate incident left her on her deathbed. The other minor characters are written into the story well.

Anna struggles with trying to find a way out of her contract with the Devil, which takes her down a path of becoming more involved with Silas and Stephen, whether she likes it or not. In her quest to try to find an “out” of her contract, she gets entangled more into the supernatural world and starts to find out that some people are lying.

I found myself relating to Anna, who struggles between being good and thankful for what she has, yet wanting more. I would have loved a bit more of a backstory of how Anna started working at Idir and met Matt. The cliffhanger at the end made me a little annoyed, since it ended so abruptly after such a pivotal turning point in the story.

I would recommend this book to anyone who liked paranomal/fantasy fiction with a strong female lead and likes a bit of mystery that leaves you wondering what will happen next. I would give this book a 4 out of 5. I liked that it was a quick read, but I wish that the author would have ended it a bit differently so it was so much of a cliffhanger. I am, however, anxious to read the next book to see what happens to Anna.

New Review! Blood at Dusk (SoulBlood #1) by Brenna Harlow 3 Cranky Stars

Blood at Dusk (SoulBlood, #1)Blood at Dusk by Brenna Harlow
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 Cranky Stars

This book took a LONG while for me to get interested in it and even when it seemed like I would start to get into it, I couldn’t. I would read a little then stop and then go back to it. I like these kinds of books and genres too.

It opens with Kora talking to her dead sister in her dreams but you don’t know until she wakes up. It almost seems like the sister is predicting her death at first. Then for Kora to wake up her sister is telling her she has to eat, she needs to find food. Kota wakes up from her dream and decides to go out and find food. At this point I’m thinking Zombies. Nope. That’s not what it is.

Aldeon is a vampire. Most of the vampires are starving and looking to kill the first thing they see. Aldeon has eaten on animals to survive. He tries to mind link to any other vampire and finds one. But he soon ditches that vampire the minute he smells and sees Kora. All he can think is “mate” and how he won’t let anyone hurt her.

Kora and Aldeon are now spending a lot of time together. He is protecting her. She is falling for him. She is his mate but to make it official they have to complete the bonding ritual.

Someone called the dark one wants Kora so bad that he will stop at nothing to get her. Kora and Aldeon left the cage after a vampire named Brone came out of hiding to warm them. They had to run from the crazy vampires and wound up finding another vampire and some humans who allowed them refuge. The crazy ones tried to get in but eventually left. Some time went by and now they are back.

What will they do? Why are they after Kora? Guess we will have to find out in the next book. I hope the next book will pick up where it left off. It took a while for this book to catch my interest. Now that it has it, we’ll, it’s the end and we have to go to the next one.

EXCERPT:

Donavon

There he is.

Mr. Filthy Chai Tea Latte.

I mean, that’s obviously not his real name. It’s his usual drink order. Chai tea, steamed milk, and two shots of espresso. A rebel’s drink for sure. And since I haven’t gotten up the guts to ask him his name yet, he remains Mr. Filthy Chai Tea Latte.

It’s at times like this I wish we were like most coffee shops and requested a name for each order rather than just the to-gos. But the owner refuses to switch from the ever reliable—his words—order number system. Today, Mr. Filthy is number twenty-one.

My lucky number. Kismet?

At least once a week he meets here at The Pour Over with a group of similarly aged teens and they chat for hours. About what? Beats me. I’ve contemplated lingering by their table, performing menial tasks like restocking the oat milk at the drink prep area or wiping down nearby tables, in order to eavesdrop. But every time, I chicken out.

“A large filthy chai tea latte?” I ask before he has a chance to utter a word.

His eyebrow—pierced by the way—quirks up, and I realize I must’ve sounded like a major creeper for committing his order to memory.

A hint of a smile breaks the corner of his mouth. “Yeah. Thanks, Donovan.”

I die.

I die.

I die.

My name rolls off his tongue like caramel sauce dripping down the side of a hot latte. I’ve clearly been working here too long if I’m making coffee metaphors already … and it’s only my second month.

Wait, he knows my name. How does he know my name? Has he asked about me?

I glance down at my apron and see my name tag resting there. The bright white letters radiate against the dark background. You could probably see it from space. Makes sense.

He pays with his phone and then, just like clockwork, drops a folded five-dollar bill into the tip jar. He’s so intriguing, paying for his drink electronically but also having cash on hand. And when I’m at the register, he leaves five dollars. Every. Single. Time. He might do the same for everyone else, but I enjoy living in the fantasy that I’m his chosen recipient. I imagine them as little love notes he leaves behind for my eyes only.

Okay. Pull it together, man. Composure.

I take in the show as he strolls off to join his group at a table near the back of the café. His tall, dark, and mysterious routine never fails to work on me. I sigh internally, but I’m not convinced a little didn’t seep out by accident.

“Smooth.”

My co-worker Marcus stands there grinning like a fool. A ridiculously gorgeous fool, but a fool nonetheless. His slicked-back chestnut brown hair is perfectly shaped to accentuate his chiseled features. The solitary dimple on his left cheek adds an extra kick to the impish grin he sends my way.

I laugh. “Yeah, definitely not my best work.”

“Nah, you did great. A real pro,” he teases. “Hey, why don’t you go talk to him? We’re slow right now and someone does have to bring him his drink, you know.”

He wriggles his brows at me. I roll my eyes.

Marcus is no stranger to affection. Unlike me, he probably hasn’t been rejected by anyone. He exudes confidence, which comes in handy when he dons a dress and a wig to perform in drag on the weekends at the one and only gay bar in Haddon Falls, Mae’s Lounge. Marcus becomes Miz Markie Marc. And yes, he does have a slight unhealthy obsession with Mark Wahlberg. Hence, the drag name. And he loves to refer to me as Donnie for the same reason.

“I don’t even know if he’s into guys like that,” I say. “Besides, he’s sort of out of my league. I mean, will you just look at that jawline?”

“With the perfect amount of scruff too,” adds Marcus.

“Exactly. And he has at least four or five inches on me in the height department.”

“What a shame, Donnie.”

“Huh?”

“Oh, nothing.”

I know that’s not all he wants to say. He has more. Marcus loves to give input … and constructive criticism.

“It’s just….”

And there it is.

Author Bio:

T.A. Kunz is the pen name for Adam Kunz, who lives in Orlando, Florida. And unfortunately a lot of the rumors you've heard about his state are true. When he's not writing, Adam spends his time reading, playing video games, watching anime and Korean dramas, and spending time with his partner while cuddling with their two dogs, Nicky and Rusty. Since childhood, he's had a great fondness for reading and writing. His fiction genres of choice are eclectic, but mainly are in the YA, MG, and NA categories. So, it was no surprise when he decided to write his own books that he'd be a grab bag kind of author in terms of story ideas. And he just loves mashing up genres. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Adam advocates strongly for diverse representation in all media. He may or may not have a coffee addiction, the jury's still out on that one. And his hands-down favorite holiday is Halloween, which holds a very special place in Adam's heart.
