Cover Reveal! Mr. Wright by J.C. Grant

Release Date: February 21, 2019
Model: Chris Connolly

Synopsis

Noah Wright was not the man for me.
Tall, sexy and beautiful. He drew attention everywhere he went. While all I wanted was to blend in—fade into the background. Nope, Noah Wright was definitely not the man for me. I’d heard the rumors and seen the women. He was a player, who flaunted his conquests for all to see. Noah Wright was not for me. Except… he was the first man to make my thighs clench and my core flutter. Giving in to temptation once couldn’t hurt, right? I just had to avoid being seen in public with him. Easy, right? Simple. And it was. Until I found out the rumors about Noah Wright were wrong, and the truth… the truth was so much worse.

Embarrassed.
That’s how I felt as I sat in Mr. Taylor’s office, watching as he read through my job application. He hadn’t looked at me since I handed it to him. And even then, it had only been a couple of seconds of eye contact. No smile. No greeting. He gave nothing away.
Neither did his office. It was modern, black and white and gray, with a sterile quality to it, like an operating room, and just as chilly—a welcomed reprieve from the August afternoon heat. I’d spent all day driving up and down the PCH, and to say my thirteen year old car’s air conditioner wasn’t up to battling the scorching temperature would be an understatement. The sweat soaked fabric clinging to my back and underarms was proof of that.
But it wasn’t the fact I was sitting in front of a seriously attractive man wearing a sweat stained dress, or the fact I’d scuffed my white Chuck Taylor’s on the floor when I walked in, making that horrible high pitched screeching sound, it wasn’t even the fact that I was a newly college drop-out that had me wishing the floor would open up and swallow me whole. Nope.
I was ashamed to be applying for a job—of needing a job. If anyone recognized me, it would be the same as publicly announcing failure. My failure. My parents failure. And I was terrified of seeing the fall from grace headlines and becoming a cautionary tale.
I was embarrassed to be me.
I never had been before.
And I never wanted to be again.
And that’s why I needed the job.
I needed to make enough money to get us out of the mess we were in.
Taking a deep breath, I shifted in my chair, then ran my hands down my thighs, unnecessarily smoothing out the skirt of my dress—the dress I had purchased to feign grieving for a recently deceased relative. It was a black cap sleeved, fit and flare style dress, probably too dressy for an interview at a gym.
Not that it mattered, because Mr. Taylor still hadn’t looked at me.
And that was the plan, to go unnoticed. To be invisible. And that was no easy feat with my nearly platinum hair, ivory skin, and baby blue eyes. But with my waves straightened and make-up free, I created a bright, pale spot that most people were uncomfortable looking at. I’d been asked on more than one occasion if I was albino.
I wasn’t. But you get the idea.
As the minutes ticked by, Mr. Taylor’s imposing presence, dispassionate expression and utter silence were starting to make me paranoid.
Was lying on a job application a felony?
It was really just a few… embellishments.
Work experience, ability to be responsible, name…
He finally laid my web of lies to the side and looked at me. His gaze was shrewd and accessing.
“You really need a job?” His voice was surprisingly kind, as if he pitied me. Or was about to give me a heart felt fuck-off kid.
Panic welled inside me.
I had applied at five other places, and been turned down at all of them. The gym was the last viable option for me; no more than thirty minutes from home, not open to the public, full-time, and decent pay. I needed this job.
“Yes, I need a job. I’ll take anything,” I rushed out, sounding pathetic. “I can start today.”
Without a word, he stood, motioning for me to follow him.

“Don’t be an asshole, Jaxon Mayer. I’m tired, okay?” she states, giving me the look. Shit, I’m in trouble. I drunkenly cuddle her, then tickle her—a foolproof plan when she is crabby. Giggles escape her mouth, and I wrap her in my arms as we dance for a bit.
Two hours later, it’s two a.m., and most of the people are leaving.
“Time to call it a night, mister,” she announces with a yawn and a raise of her eyebrows. I throw my arms around her and snuggle into her neck. Yep, I’m ready for bed with this one.
“I have cash, Jax, so I’ll call a cab,” she tells me, digging into her bag for her cell.
“Don’t be silly, guys. I’ve had three drinks, and I’m driving a block farther than you, so jump in,” Scotty declares, unlocking his Jeep with Boyd and Lucas behind him.
“Jaxon, he’s had more than three. He was drinking most the night,” Em whispers to me, but I’m pretty intoxicated, so I don’t listen. He’s talking fine to me, and it’s like ten miles away, so it will be okay.
“It will be fine, baby. Trust me,” I tell her and distract her with a sweet kiss.
“God, Jax, you absolutely reek of beer, and I can taste the bitterness on your breath,” she tells me, scrunching up her face as we climb in the back seat. Lucas stumbles in next to me and cracks open another Budweiser and downs it.
“Want the other, bro?” he slurs, showing me the Budweiser can, but I shake my head.
“I’m a lightweight compared to you regular alchos,” I reply, and it’s true. I’m sure with one more, I would either pass out or spew, and both options would suck. They all chuckle with laughter.
“Yeah, Jacko, we gotta be better than you at something, bro.” Boyd snickers.
I smile at his comment, then put my hand on Emily’s knee. I gaze at her face and realize she looks agitated as she fidgets with her seat belt. “What’s up?” I ask her.
“I have a bad feeling, Jax. Can we just get a cab home?”
I don’t even have a chance to answer her before all the doors close and Scotty speeds off.
“Shit man, can you slow down a little?” I shout, but the blasting music drowns out my words.
I shrug my shoulders at her and smile. As I said, it’s not far.
Lucas is singing along to Tumbawumba. “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you ain’t ever gonna keep me down.” I find myself swaying along as it’s a damn catchy song. Em puts her head on my shoulder and closes her eyes. I’m relieved she’s finally relaxed.
Lucas uncomfortably slides into me as Scotty takes the sharp corner faster than he should. I should be accustomed to his crazy driving, but he still manages to surprise me.
“Shit, man, take it easy,” I shout over the loud stereo.
Next thing I know, he’s taking another sharp corner, and the steering wheel locks. The tires burn rubber on the road, and a loud screech echoes over the music. The car is jolted sideways and slams into something hard. My head knocks into Lucas’s, and shit, that hurt.
Then it all goes dark.
When I wake, my eyes are heavy, and I blink to adjust as it’s still dark outside. I pull and struggle as my seat belt is restricting me, then I realize we are still in the freaking car. I’ve lost the ability to speak, and I’m in shock as realization sets in that the car has crashed. My heartbeat is racing, and my hands feel clammy. I unclick my seat belt as I struggle to get free. My neck is jarred, and I have whiplash. The music isn’t on anymore, and the motor must be dead as it’s eerily silent.
“Jaxon.” I hear Emily’s frantic voice.
Jesus Christ is all I can think as I turn and see she is trapped by the broken glass on her window. Then I notice the passenger seat has also come loose and is pushing against her.
Tears stream down her face, and she has a split lip and is shrieking in fear. “I’m stuck, help me,” she wails. I’m overwhelmed with fear and suddenly immobile. There’s blood, and I’m still drunk. Shit.
I literally have no idea what to do. She can’t be moved. Shit.
I inhale a deep breath. Focus. She’s the one who should be scared.
Be her rock, Jaxon. You have to be the rock that keeps her calm and still. Do it for her, for your love.
I supportively hold her shaking hand. “It will be okay, Em. I’ve got your hand, and I’m here. I won’t leave your side, I promise,” I declare as I caress her trembling fingers. Her crying eases a little, but it doesn’t stop.

New Review! Love Conquer (Battlefield of Love #3) by Cary Hart 4.5 Cranky Stars

Love Conquer (Battlefield of Love #3)Love Conquer by Cary Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

Ok this is my favorite one of the series. My heart is all a flutter for Kyle. I seriously thought Gavin was for me, but man was I wrong. Kyle is the ultimate book boyfriend with his hand hugs and rocking chairs and Lipton tea.

Nina has escaped abuse at the hands of man who claims to love her yet uses his words and his fists to belittle her and obliterate her soul and her self-worth. She escapes to her sister’s house where she slowly starts to piece herself back together bit by bit. She accepts a job at Java Talk and is putting one foot in front of the other until Kyle walks in. She knows it’s too soon but why can’t she have a friend? Their friendship turns to hugs that make her soul feel healed and alive. Nina knows the past is lurking in the shadows and when it comes to light it’s a fight for her life but the thought of Kyle gives her strength.

Kyle thought he had it all until his step brother swooped in. His family relationship is strained, and he throws himself into the construction business and his hardware store. Anything to distract his brain and all the what ifs. When he meets a timid girl at a coffee shop, he wants to save her but more than that he wants to hopefully love her and heal her. He takes it step by step for Nina’s sake. Just when he thinks he is in a good place the past comes back to haunt him and he fears he will lose Nina forever before they had a chance to start.

Kyle!! That’s all!! I love that he was such a gentleman, but his innuendos were giving me life. He injected humor and such heart into everything he did. He was perfect for Nina. My heart absolutely broke for that girl. I can’t imagine the things she suffered and how she managed to pick herself up. She thought she was weak, but I thought she was a strong girl. Brandon well he deserved what he got. He is a deplorable human being. We get to see more of the gang from crazy Niki to the motherly Aubrey. I will say it again this is my favorite story in the series.

4.5 Stars Cranky

For me it was a slow start, but stick with it, because it ends with a BANG!! Once the story hooked me, I couldn’t put it down. Everything came together very well, the characters, the idea, the world, the dialogue. I was entranced.

Set in a dystopian Earth ravaged by the New Black Death the generations of survivors have founded Etyom, a society where genetics matter and a person called the Leader to rule them. The genetically engineered Graciles live above the clouds and plague in advanced homes; The Robusts make up the enclaves below where savagery, drugs & sex are a means for survival. Mila and Demitri team up to take on higher ups and carve a place for not only themselves, but other like them in this new dystopian world. A very dark adventure filled with science and mystery. A perfect title for an amazing book!

New Review! Of Sound Mind and Someone Else's Body by William Quincy Belle 5 Cranky Stars

This author fell right out of thin air and into my blogs message center... literally. Yes I'm laughing at my horrible joke but you would too if you read this book. Kudos to this man for forcing me to step out of my comfort zone to read something new and love every minute of it.

What if you woke from a sound sleep and realized very quickly you aren't you anymore. Jolting awake half dressed as the opposite sex no less. Well, for Hanna and Alan this happened and they had to adapt rather quickly to the new ..erm.... hardware.

While this book was funny and far fetched it also had me thinking. Who hasn't thought about being the opposite sex? I know I have, but this story delves into the psychological and physical challenges. It made this reader think of more than just the obvious. All I can say is, BUY THIS BOOK! You won't be sorry. In fact you'll probably thank me.

New Review! Dirty Blood (Crane Diaries #2) by Apryl Baker 4 Cranky Stars

The Crane Diaries: Dirty BloodThe Crane Diaries: Dirty Blood by Apryl Baker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

Emma Rose Crane (AKA Mattie Hathaway) is still adjusting to having a family and friends who are with her no matter what. She’s finally becoming a young woman and wants her father to treat her as such. With Officer Dan at her side she feels she can do anything mainly because their souls are tied together. When a hunting excursion goes wrong and she’s attacked by a Rougarou it’s a race against time to find him and kill him so her and Cas will survive. With her many sides waring in her mind she must find a middle ground or risk losing herself forever. She turns to people she swore she would never seek out and learns half of the voodoo priestess population really don’t like her. With days to spare she has a plan in place and a group of amazing people to help her out.

I went back and read The Ghost Files after I read Homecoming. I devoured that series in several days it was very interesting and unique. It gave me more insight to how Mattie became Emma. I adore Dan he worships the ground she walks on and nothing will stop him. Only problem I had was it seems the Rougarou(Roo Ga Roo) issue was an afterthought considering it was why she was In trouble in the first place.

Dirty Blood seemed to focus more on her acceptance of her new life and the losses she encountered then last minute it was oh yeah let’s go get that boogie monster. Maybe it was done that way to help her along I’m not sure. I’m originally from Louisiana myself and we know all about the Rougarou it’s a creepy thing that’s for sure and one you don’t want to encounter in the swamp at any time. I can’t wait to see what else Emma and her misfits get into in the next book.

New Review! Bound (Bound Series #1) by Jennifer Dean 3 Cranky Stars

Bound (Bound Series, #1)Bound by Jennifer Dean
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 Cranky Stars

I have mixed feelings about this book. I will state the obvious first: this is Twilight fan fiction. The plot, the characters, the situations, even some of the names are the same. It is really a shame that this book lifts so heavily from the Twilight series because the author didn’t have to. Ms. Dean is a skilled writer.

The heroine's internal dialogue is far superior to Bella Swan. Emma is the better protagonist. She’s twice as smart and less then half as emo. I think Jennifer Dean is very talented. She needs to focus that talent on original plots.

This book is almost a scene for scene recreation of Twilight. Just swap the word “vampire” for “immortal.”

New Review! Love Divide (Battlefield of Love #2) by Cary Hart 4.5 Stars

Love Divide (Battlefield of Love, #2)Love Divide by Cary Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 Cranky Stars

Niki has secrets deep rooted secrets. All she feels she needs in life is Aubrey and of course Gavin. She has always felt a pull toward Gavin but wasn’t sure he felt the same way. She knew deep down but didn’t want to risk a friendship. When money problems arise she is offered a personal assistant job for the summer to Aiden Alexander. She embarks on this summer job and feelings develop. Aiden has issues and secrets himself and she is torn. Torn between two men. One she knows so much about and knows her and one who is mysterious and only shows small snippets of himself.

Gavin Shaw has always loved Niki. She brought light to his dark world and he has held onto that. Being whatever Niki needed at that moment without ever taking it a step further. When Niki up and quits her summer job he knows deep down that Aiden will just hurt Niki in the end, but he has to let her fall. While she’s away they keep contact, but he tries to move on. Realizing that she is all he will ever need he hopes for a chance to tell her. When their worlds collide again it’s filled with drama and heartache and fireworks.

I have a serious crush on Gavin Shaw. He is book boyfriend material to the very end. I like that Niki was spunky and she knew who she was. She was loud and foul mouthed a lot of the times but she loved hard. Aiden my dear I want to feel sorry for him but he made his bed and now he’s on the pay no mind list. This book isn’t all love and happiness there is some serious drama too. I was holding my breath at the very end. I can’t wait to pick up the next book in the series.

New Review! From the Grave (Mackenzie Grey: Trials #1) by Karina Espinoza 3 Cranky Stars

From the Grave (Mackenzie Grey: Trials, #1)From the Grave by Karina Espinosa
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 Cranky Stars

I found the pacing of this book a little off. This is the first book in the series, however a lot has already happened in the storyline before the beginning of this book. It feels like I started watching a movie about 30 minutes after it already started. Because of this, I find the backtracking and pre book plot kind of confusing.

In this story, there are lots of characters with lots of implied backstory. I would have liked to see these backstories while in progress. I feel that the characters would have been more easily relatable that way. I found it difficult to get emotionally invested in the characters.

Mackenzie and Sebastian as a couple were a little underwhelming. As I said, we get dropped in the middle of their story. We don’t get to see the evolution or the beginning of it, so it’s hard to become invested. I like the author’s writing style. I enjoyed Mackenzie's quick wit. She's a powerful, yet flawed female lead. I give this 3 out of 5 stars. It was ok.
